Trailblazers Fall at In-State Rival Utah on Tuesday

Dixie State could not build upon an early inning lead as the Trailblazers came out on the short end of a 12-1 decision at in-state rival Utah on Tuesday afternoon at Smith's Ballpark.

After a scoreless opening frame, the Trailblazers (16-23) broke through with a two-out run in the second when Mathew Ivancich beat out an infield single to drive in Jack Walker from third carrying the game's first run.

Utah (24-15-1) quickly countered with a pair of unearned runs in the home half of the frame to jump out to a 2-1 advantage. With one runner on and two outs in the stanza, the Utes took advantage of an ill-timed DSU throwing error, which kept the inning alive for lead-off hitter Kai Roberts, who singled through the left side two pitches later to plate both base runners.

DSU had a chance to tie or retake the lead in the fourth, which began with Tyler Hollow's 37th-career double. Walker followed with a five-pitch walk and Sean Keating bunted both base runners over, but Ute reliever Bryson Van Sickle would deny the scoring chance as he retired the next two Blazers he faced to keep the Utah lead intact.

The Utes then broke the game open with four runs in the home fourth and two more in the fifth to extend to a commanding 8-1 advantage.

Dixie State was limited to just three hits and six total base runners the rest of the way, though the Blazers did manage to load the bases with two outs in the seventh. However the Utes' relief corps was able to again escape without any damage.

Hollow went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead the Blazers, who finished with eight safeties on the day. The senior's fourth-inning double moved him into a tie for fourth place on DSU's career list with former Trailblazer slugger Jake Engel (37; 2017-21). Meanwhile Hollow's hits also pulled him (191 hits) even with Engel for fourth place on DSU's career hits list.

Dixie State returns to WAC play this Friday-through-Sunday with a three-game road series at New Mexico State.
