Trailblazers Stung by Sacramento State on Saturday, 7-2

Dixie State dropped the middle game of its WAC weekend series to Sacramento State by a 7-2 count on Saturday afternoon at Bruce Hurst Field. The setback marked the third-straight conference series loss for the Trailblazers as DSU fell to 15-22 overall, 9-11 in WAC play.

The Hornets (20-18/11-9 WAC) scored six of their seven runs via the long ball, beginning with a one-out Trevor Doyle solo home run in the first inning off of DSU starter Brett Porthan (L, 5-4). Sacramento State then struck for five more runs in the third, which included a Jorge Bojorquez grand slam, to extend to a commanding 6-0 lead.

Meanwhile, the Trailblazers were held hitless through their first four offensive frames before Parker Schmidt doubled to straight-away center field to lead off the fifth. Sean Keating followed with another double, though Schmidt had to hold up on the play and only advanced to third.

Mathew Ivancich then hit into a fielder's choice that hung Keating up between second and third, but Keating was able to retreat to the second base bag after a brief rundown, while Schmidt raced home carrying DSU's first run.

However Sac State starter Noah Takacs (W, 1-2) escaped further damage as he retired the next three Blazers he faced.

Dixie State made it a 6-2 game in the sixth when Schmidt singled home Tyson Fisher, who reached on a one-out double. DSU's bullpen also stepped up as three Blazer relievers combined to limit the Hornets to just one run and five hits from the fourth inning on.

Sacramento State would get that one run in the seventh thanks to a Dawson Bacho solo homer, and Hornet reliever Myles Meyer (S, 1) struck out four and held DSU to just one hit and three total base runners over the final three innings to wrap up the series win.

The Trailblazers were held to just five hits on the day, with Schmidt accounting for two of those safeties.

Dixie State will look to salvage the final game of the series on Sunday beginning at 12 noon.
