Dixie State opened its four-game, non-conference series at Cal Poly on the short end of a 12-3 decision on Friday night at Baggett Stadium.
Â
DSU drew first blood in the second when
Will Chambers blasted his first home run as Trailblazer to stake his side to an early 2-0 lead.
Zach Thomas walked to lead off the frame, then two batters later, Chambers took a 2-1 Drew Thorpe (W, 4-0) offering well over the 405 sign in straight away center field to put DSU on the scoreboard.Â
Â
However that lead would be short-lived as the Mustangs (15-10) took advantage of one costly Blazer error in the home second to tie the game at 2-2. Cal Poly (15-10) followed that up with five runs an inning later, thanks in part to DSU's second error of the game, to bolt out to a commanding 7-2 advantage.Â
Â
The Mustangs would tack on four more runs in the sixth and another in the eighth on their way to their third-straight win.Â
Â
Meanwhile Dixie State (13-11) could not muster any offense from the second inning on as the Mustangs held the Blazers to just one run and five hits the rest of the way. Sophomore
Brett Porthan (L, 5-1) pitched into the sixth and struck out four, though he was touched up for 11 hits and eight earned runs (10 total) in suffering his first loss of the season.
Â
The two teams will continue the weekend series with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. (PT).Â
