Trailblazers Swept in Saturday Twin Bill at Cal Poly

Dixie State dropped the middle two games of its four-game series at Cal Poly, 6-4 and 9-0, on Saturday afternoon at Baggett Stadium.

In game one, the Trailblazers (13-13) jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead, striking for three runs in the first and another tally in the second. Shane Taylor walked to lead off the game and would advance to third when Kaden Hollow split the gap in right center with a double.

Zach Thomas followed with an opposite field single to right center to plate Taylor with the game's first run, and DSU would get its second run two pitches later on a Chase Rodriguez groundout. Thomas advanced to second on the play and after another groundball out moved him to third, he scampered home with the third run of the rally thanks to a Jack Walker base hit.

Cal Poly (17-10) countered with a run in the home first, but Dixie State got that run back in the second when Taylor doubled in Jagun Leavitt, who reached on a one-out walk.

The Mustangs trimmed DSU lead to 4-2 with a run in the third, and after a scoreless fourth, Cal Poly took advantage of three Blazer errors to plate four unearned runs with two outs in the fifth to turn the two-run deficit into a two-run lead.

Dixie State had a chance to tie or take the lead in the ninth when Leavitt singled and Taylor walked with one out. However Mustang reliever Jason Franks (S, 2) retired the next two Trailblazers he faced to close out the win.

Taylor reached base safely in all five plate appearances, going 2-for-2 with three walks to lead the Blazers, who finished with eight hits in the game. Sophomore righthander Dillon Holliday (L, 2-4) struck out three in six innings of work, allowing seven hits and six runs, though only two of those runs were unearned.

In the nightcap, Cal Poly opened up a 7-0 lead after four innings of play, scoring a pair of runs in each of the first two innings, before breaking the game open with three runs in the home fourth.

Meanwhile, Dixie State was held to a season-low two hits as Mustang southpaw Travis Weston (W, 3-1) fired a complete game shutout innings with eight strikeouts.

Dixie State will look to avoid the series sweep in Sunday's finale, which begins at 12 noon (PT).
