Trailblazers "Hammer" Utah Valley in Game Two on Saturday, 12-1

Dixie State claimed the second win in its WAC season opening, and "Old Hammer Rivalry," series with a convincing 12-1 victory over in-state rival Utah Valley in seven innings on Saturday afternoon at Bruce Hurst Field.

The Trailblazers (6-4/2-0 WAC) plated all 12 runs over their first three offensive frames en route to a commanding double-digit lead.

After scoring two runs in both the first and second innings, DSU erupted for eight runs in the third, sending 11-straight batters to the plate before the Wolverines (2-8/0-2 WAC) could record an out.

Chase Rodriguez collected the first RBI of the rally with a bases-loaded walk, which was followed by a Jack Walker run-scoring bunt single to the right side of the infield. Mathew Ivancich then stepped up and unloaded the bases with his first home run of the season to make a 10-0 game.

DSU would re-load the bases again with walks to Jagun Leavitt and Kaden Hollow, which bookended a Shane Taylor double. Tyson Fisher followed with single to left field to drive home the seventh run, and the Blazers plated their eighth run one batter later on a 4-6-3 double play for UVU's first two outs of the inning.

The run support was more than enough for sophomore righthander Brett Porthan (W, 2-0), who tied a career-high with seven strikeouts and scattered one run on four over six innings to earn his second win of the season.

DSU pounded out 10 hits on the afternoon, with Taylor collecting a career-high four of those safeties. The sophomore infielder finished the day 4-for-4 day at the plate with three runs scored, including a towering two-run blast high over the centerfield wall in the second inning.

Dixie State will go for the series sweep on Sunday beginning at 12:05 p.m.
