Dixie State could not recover from a hot Redhawk start as the Trailblazers dropped the opening game of their three-game WAC road series at Seattle U, 13-6, on Friday afternoon at Bannerwood Ballpark.
Â
DSU (11-10/6-4 WAC) fell into an early hole as the Redhawks combined to hit for the cycle and plate four runs in the home first, which culminated with a two-run Matt Boissoneault homer.
Â
The Trailblazers managed to get two of those runs back an inning later on a two-out
Mathew Ivancich triple to cut the deficit in half at 4-2.
Â
Trailing 6-2 in the seventh, Dixie State loaded the bases with one-out walks to
Shane Taylor and
Kaden Hollow, which bookended a
Zach Thomas single.
Tyson Fisher then drew a free pass to force in a run and a Seattle U pitching change.
New Redhawk pitcher Alex McBee would uncork a wild pitch on his first offering to allow another Blazer run to score. However the southpaw would get his team off the hook as he retired the two DSU hitters he faced to end the threat and send the game to the stretch with Dixie State trailing 6-4.
Â
Seattle U (7-12/5-2 WAC) quickly put the game out of reach with three runs in the home seventh and four more in the eighth to slam the door on the Blazers to clinch the first game of the weekend set.
Â
Dixie State racked up nine hits on the day, with Taylor and
Parker Schmidt collecting two hits apiece, while Ivancich and Fisher each drove in two runs. Â Â
Â
The two teams will square off in game two of the three-game set on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. (MT).
