Trailblazers Rally Past Nevada on Wednesday, 7-5

Dixie State closed out its five-game road trip with a 7-5 come-from-behind victory at Nevada on Wednesday afternoon at Don Weir Field at Peccole Park. The Trailblazers finished their trip with a 3-2 record to improve to 9-7 overall.

Nevada (8-6) led 2-0 through five innings complete, plating one run in the first and another in the fourth off of Trailblazer righthander Jake Dahle, who despite those two runs, held the Wolf Pack to just four hits over that span.

Meanwhile the Trailblazers went hitless through their first five offensive frames, though they managed to get the lead-off batter on in the first, second and fifth innings. Dixie State finally broke through with three runs and five hits in the sixth to take its first lead of the series at 3-2.

Pinch hitter Zach Thomas tripled to begin the rally, then after a Tyson Fisher infield hit, freshman Ethan He, making his collegiate debut, collected his first career hit and RBI with a double to left field to chase home Thomas with the Blazers' first run.

Hank Dodson followed with a sacrifice fly out to center to drive in Fisher to tie the game, which also allowed He to advance third. Pinch hitter Tyler Hollow then flew out to left field to plate He with the go-ahead run as DSU sent eight batters to the plate in the rally.

DSU kept the vibe going in the seventh, scoring two more runs thanks to a wild pitch and Mathew Ivancich pinch hit RBI-single to extend the Blazer lead to 5-2 heading into the stretch. The Trailblazers then tacked another run in the eighth when Chase Rodriguez doubled home Parker Schmidt, who reached on a one-out single.

Nevada got one of those runs back in the home eighth on a Landon Wallace lead-off homer, though DSU managed to answer with a big insurance run of its own in the ninth.

As it turned out, the Trailblazers needed those last two runs as the Wolf Pack scored twice in the bottom of the ninth and had the tying run on second base with two outs. However sophomore reliever Ryan Hardman struck out Nevada center fielder Dario Gomez looking to end the game.

Dixie State racked up nine hits on the day, with Schmidt and Thomas finishing with two hits apiece. Dahle (W, 1-1) lasted five innings, allowing just the two runs and four hits with one strikeout to earn his first victory as a Trailblazer.

Dixie State returns home this Friday-through-Sunday for a key three-game WAC series vs. New Mexico State at Bruce Hurst Field.
