Kaden Hollow homered and drove in three runs as Dixie State stopped a four-game slide with a 6-3 victory over Seattle U in the opening game of a WAC weekend series on Friday night at Bruce Hurst Field.
Hollow got the Trailblazers (16-30/14-15 WAC) on the board in the home second with a double to left center to bring home
Cade Spurlin, who singled to lead off the frame. The freshman catcher would make a 2-0 game three batters later when he scampered home on a
Mathew Ivancich RBI-single.
Seattle U (13-27/7-18 WAC) answered with two runs of its own an inning later, but DSU jumped back on top in its half of the third thanks to a
Tyson Fisher run-scoring fly out.
Hollow would extend the Blazer lead to 5-2 in the fifth with his team-leading eighth homer of the season, a two-out, two-run shot over the wall in left center.
Lane Pritchard reached on a one-out single and later stole his team-leading 11
th base of the year ahead of the Hollow long ball.
The Redhawks got one of those runs back in the sixth, which spelled the end of the day for freshman starter
Dillon Holliday (W, 4-2). Junior reliever
Jack Gonzales (S, 1) came on and fired 3.2 innings of one-hit shutout relief to close out the win. Gonzales struck out five and escaped a bases loaded jam in the ninth on his way to his first career save.
Pritchard and Fisher joined Hollow in posting a two-hit night as the Trailblazers outhit Seattle U 9-8. Holliday struck out two and scattered three runs and seven hits in 5.1 innings to collect his fourth win of the season.
The two teams will play the middle pair of their four-game weekend set on Saturday afternoon beginning at 2:05 p.m.
