Dixie State dropped the middle pair of its four game home WAC series with UTRGV, 13-3 and 18-1, on Saturday afternoon at Bruce Hurst Field. The two losses snapped the Trailblazers modest three-game winning streak as DSU fell to 3-12 overall, 2-5 in conference play.
In game one, the Blazers got off to a hot start offensively as
Tyler Hollow led off the DSU first with a single, which was followed by consecutive doubles from
Tyson Fisher and
Kaden Hollow, the latter of which put Dixie State up by a 2-1 count.
UTRGV (11-8/4-3 WAC) countered with two runs in the third to reclaim the lead, then outscored Dixie State 10-1 over the fifth and sixth innings as the Vaqueros claimed the win by the conference run rule after the sixth was completed.
Tyler Hollow collected two of DSU's five hits in the opener, including a double of his own, while
Kaden Hollow accounted for two of the Blazers' three RBI.
In the nightcap, freshman
Hank Dodson put Dixie State on the board with his first collegiate home run, a towering solo blast that stayed just fair inside the left field foul pole with one out in the home second.
However that would be it for the Blazers as UTRGV scored 18-unanswered runs over the final five innings, including a seven-run third frame, to again claim victory via run rule.
Dodson finished with two of Dixie State's five hits in the second game.
Dixie State will look to salvage a series split as the two teams play the final game of the set on Sunday beginning at 12:05 p.m. (MT).
