Dixie State used a pair of timely scoring runs to complete its two-game home sweep of Bethesda University with a 99-67 victory on Wednesday night inside the Burns Arena. The game two result almost matched the final score of the first game played the night before, which the Trailblazers won by a 99-61 count.
Â
It looked as if Wednesday's tilt was going to be a carbon copy of the game one win as the Blazers (3-5) jumped out to an early double-digit lead at 21-11 just seven-plus minutes into the contest.
Â
The Flames (1-11) had other ideas though, thanks in part to the hot shooting of guard Mark Carter. The Bethesda guard knocked down three of the Flames' next four 3-pointers, including his third trey that capped a 17-6 run that spotted his side a 28-27 lead with 7:47 remaining in the opening half.
Â
However that would be the final time Bethesda would lead as Dixie State doused any hope of an upset by outscoring the Flames 21-6 to close out the frame to take a commanding 48-34 lead into the locker room.
Â
Dixie State kept that momentum going to begin the second half, scoring 10 of the period's first 12 points as part of a back-breaking 26-8 run over a six-plus minutes span to extend to a 74-42 advantage with 13:32 to play. The Blazers did not see their lead dip below 20 points the rest of the way as they cruised to their second-straight lopsided win.
Â
Cameron Gooden led three Trailblazers in double figures with 18 points on 6-of-10 shooting. The junior guard also pulled down five rebounds to go with three assists and three steals.
Â
Hunter Schofield followed up his 18-point performance in Tuesday's win with his first double-double of the year with 17 points and a season-high 10 rebounds. The senior's 10 boards also pulled him into a three-way tie for ninth place on DSU's career rebounding list (344) with former DSU players Derek Owen (2007, 2010-13) and Dalton Groskreutz (2008, 2011-14).
Â
Meanwhile
Frank Staine tallied in 10 points for the second-straight game, and
Jamaal Barnes chipped in a career-high nine points off the bench.
Â
Dixie State shot 46.8 percent (36-of-77) on the night, which included a 7-of-21 clip (.333) from the perimeter. DSU also connected on 76.9 percent at the line (20-of-26) and posted its second 50-plus rebound effort in as many games as the Blazers outrebounded Bethesda by a 56-40 margin. In addition, the Blazer defense combined to force 23 Bethesda turnovers, which resulted in a school record 18 steals, including three steals each for
Dancell Leter, Gooden and
Isaiah Pope.
Â
Carter led all scorers with 25 points, which included six 3-pointers, and finished with nine rebounds. The Flames went 26-of-71 (.366) from the floor with 12 made 3-pointers (12-of-42, .286).
Dixie State continues its homestand this Saturday night with a matchup against Saint Katherine. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
