No. 13 Dixie State started its final regular season RMAC road swing on a sour note as the Trailblazers saw their four-game winning streak stopped at Regis, 73-61, on Friday night inside the Regis Fieldhouse.
Despite the loss, the Trailblazers (21-5/16-4 RMAC) remained tied atop the conference standings with Black Hills State (16-4), this after BHSU was defeated at Colorado School of Mines (15-5), 79-43, which also pulled Mines within a game of first place with two regular season games remaining.
DSU led by as many as six points at 18-12 after a pair of
Lleyton Parker free throws with 11:45 to play in the opening half. That lead would quickly disappear as the Rangers (15-11/10-10 RMAC) scored 13-straight points over a near five-minute span and would outscore the Blazers 20-8 to close the period to take a 32-26 lead into the halftime intermission.
Dixie State managed to cut the deficit in half at 35-32 following a
Dason Youngblood lay-up and free throw early in the second stanza. However the Rangers would counter with a 14-4 run to extend to their largest lead of the night at 49-36 at the 12:30 mark after a Donald Gipson 3-pointer.
Regis maintained at least an eight-point advantage over the next 11-plus minutes and led by as many as 14 points at 60-46 with 5:17 to go. DSU would make one final push thanks to an 11-3 spurt that pulled the Blazers to within six at 63-57 with 55 seconds remaining after a
Hunter Schofield bucket, but the Rangers went 8-for-8 from the foul line in the closing moments to put the game away.
Youngblood paced the Trailblazers with 17 points with seven rebounds and three assists, while
Jack Pagenkopf scored all 15 of his points after halftime, with six of those points coming in DSU's final run. Pagenkopf also collected five assists and six boards before fouling out late.
Dixie State's offense was held to a season-low 34.5 percent from the floor (20-of-58), which included a paltry 3-of-14 (.214) from the perimeter. It was the 3-point arc that proved to be the difference in the game as Regis hit 13 3-pointers (13-of-33, .394), and two more total field goals than DSU overall, as the Rangers shot 22-of-57 (.386) on the night.
The Trailblazers did manage to go 18-of-24 (.750) at the foul line and outrebounded Regis by a 41-38 count, including a career-high 12 rebounds for senior
Cameron Chatwin.
Christian Little led all scorers with 21 points, while Gipson accounted for five of the Rangers' 13 made 3-pointers as he finished with 18 points.Â
Dixie State will close its two-game trip to the Front Range with a Saturday night date at Colorado Christian. Tip-off in Lakewood is slated for 7 p.m.
