Six Trailblazers scored in double figures as No. 15 Dixie State rolled to a 102-81 victory over Adams State Friday night inside the Burns Arena.
With the win, the Trailblazers' third-straight and the ninth in their last 10 games, Dixie State reached the 20-win plateau for the seventh time in the program's NCAA era as DSU improved to 20-4 overall. The Blazers also clinched an 2020 RMAC Tournament berth and remained tied (with Black Hills State) on top the RMAC standings at 15-3 with four regular season conference games remaining.
DSU led wire-to-wire and used a decisive 33-9 run over the final 13 minutes of the first half to turn a 21-16 lead into a 54-25 halftime advantage. The Blazers limited the Grizzlies (7-17/5-13 RMAC) to just 9-of-31 (.290) and forced 11 ASU miscues in the period, while DSU hit on 23 of its first 47 (.489) from the floor en route to its near 30-point cushion.
Dixie State would extend its lead to as many as 33 points in the second half, but the Grizzlies, who had only eight players available for the game, did not go down without a fight. ASU hit nine 3-pointers in the period, six of which came off the hot hand of guard Logan Longo, which helped cut the Trailblazer lead to 14 at 83-69 with just under eight minutes to play.
However the Trailblazers quelled any chance of a Grizzly comeback as Dixie State outscored ASU 17-5 to extend back to a 100-74 lead with two minutes to go and would coast home from there for win.
Dason Youngblood paced the Blazers with 19 points on 9-of-14 shooting, while Hunter Schofield hit six of his 10 shots to finish with 13 points and Frank Staine chipped in 10.
Meanwhile, Jack Pagenkopf just missed his second (and DSU's second-ever) triple-double of the season by one assist as the senior tallied 11 points with 10 rebounds, nine assists and four steals. Pagenkopf's nine dimes did vault him into a tie for first place on Dixie State's single-season assist list with 147 assists on the year. Pagenkopf joined former DSU guard Dan Stock, who amassed 147 assists in DSU's first year of NCAA play in 2006-07.
In addition, Josh Newbold added 14 points in 14 reserve minutes, and Cameron Chatwin recorded his first career double-double with 12 points and 10 boards off the bench as DSU's bench outscored the Grizzly reserves by a 45-15 count.
Dixie State shot 53.8 percent (42-of-78) from the floor, which included an even 40.0 clip (8-of-25) from the perimeter. DSU's 42 made field goals were a season high, as was the Blazers' +30 rebounding margin as Dixie State outrebounded ASU by a 54-24 count, which included a 19-3 edge on the offensive glass.
Longo and Kaelin Crane poured in 21 points apiece to lead Adams State, which finished the game 46.2 percent (30-of-65) from the field with 11 made 3-pointers (11-of-33, .333).
Dixie State's win on Friday night also tied a four-year era program record as the Trailblazers reached the 20-win plateau in just their 24th game of the year. In the 2011-12 campaign, DSU also started the year 20-4, though that team lost three-straight to finish the season at 20-7. Â
DSU will close the home portion of its 2019-20 regular season schedule on Saturday night vs. Fort Lewis. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.
