No. 19 Trailblazers Run Past Fort Lewis Friday Night, 90-72

No. 19 Dixie State used a pair of big second half runs to rally past Fort Lewis by a 90-72 count on Friday night inside Whalen Gymnasium. The Trailblazers opened their crucial four-game RMAC road swing with their sixth-straight win to improve to 17-3 overall, and the 100th road win in the program's NCAA era (100-69), and remained tied atop the conference standings at 12-2.

The win streak looked to be in doubt in the early going as Fort Lewis broke open a back-and-forth game with a 14-2 run, including nine-straight to start the rally, to race out to a 24-14 lead with 10:17 to play in the opening half.

The Trailblazers managed to keep the Skyhawks within striking distance, however, as DSU scored 11 of the next 16 points to make it a four-point game at 29-25. Then after a Brenden Boatwright jumper, Jack Pagenkopf knocked down back-to-back shots, including a 3-pointer, which pulled Dixie State to within a point at 31-30.

Frank Staine would go on a tear right before halftime as he scored DSU's final eight points, including consecutive perimeter jumpers, the second of which put the Blazers back on top at 36-33 with 1:30 to go in the period. Staine would hit another bucket right before halftime to finish the frame with 12 points as Dixie State headed to the locker room tied at 38-38.

Down 47-44 with just over 16 minutes to play in regulation the Trailblazers went off, outscoring FLC 16-6 over a four-plus minute span to take their biggest lead of the night at 60-53 following a Dason Youngblood lay-in. Andre Wilson kick-started the rally with a trey, while Cameron Chatwin accounted for seven those 16 points, including a 3-pointer of his own.

Dixie State then broke the game open with 10-straight points as part of a decisive 14-4 run to put the game away. Schofield and Youngblood started the run with jumpers, while Wilson and Jacob Nicolds connected from downtown with consecutive dagger threes that all but spelled the end of the night for the Skyhawks.

DSU coasted home from there as the Blazers wound up outscoring Fort Lewis 25-14 over the final 10:32 of the game.

Schofield and Staine led five Trailblazers in double figures with 15 points apiece, with Schofield hitting on seven of his 13 shot attempts to go with a game-high 11 rebounds en route to his third double-double of the year. Meanwhile Staine went 5-of-7 from the floor with four 3-pointers in five attempts from beyond the arc.

Chatwin enjoyed another solid night off the bench as the senior finished with a season-high tying 13 points and seven boards, and Wilson poured in 11 points, all of which came after halftime, including 3-of-4 from 3-point country. In addition, Pagenkopf posted his second double-double of the year with 11 points and a career-high tying 10 assists.

DSU shot 58.5 percent (38-of-65) on the night, which included a 61.1 percent clip (22-of-36) in the second half. The Blazers also drilled 10 3-pointers and finished 10-of-22 (.455) from the perimeter, which offset a 4-of-8 night (.500) at the foul line.

Dixie State outrebounded Fort Lewis by a 30-22 count and dished out a season-high 27 assists to just 10 turnovers, including a career-high tying eight dimes for Youngblood to complement Pagenkopf's effort. The 27 assists are also the fourth-highest single game total in Dixie State's NCAA-era, and are the most assists recorded in a road game in program history.

DSU held the nation's seventh-leading scorer and reigning RMAC Player of the Week Riley Farris to nearly nine points below his season average as he finished with 16 points to lead four Skyhawks in double figures. FLC went 25-of-58 (.431) from the floor, 6-of-21 (.286) from beyond the arc.

Dixie State will head to Alamosa for a Saturday night date at Adams State. Tip off is slated for 7:30 p.m.
