No. 19 Trailblazers Tripped Up at Adams State Saturday Night, 82-75

No. 19 Dixie State saw its six-game RMAC win streak come to a halt in an 82-75 upset loss at Adams State Saturday night inside Plachy Hall. The Trailblazers' loss dropped them out of a first place tie atop the RMAC standings as DSU fell to 17-4 overall, 12-3 in conference play.

DSU looked to be in control in the early going, thanks in part to a pair of 9-2 spurts to race out to a 22-11 lead 12 minutes in. The Blazers poured in nine of the game's first 11 points, then scored seven-straight as part of another 9-2 run that turned a four-point lead into a double-digit cushion following a Hunter Schofield lay-in with 8:02 left until halftime.

Adams State (7-14/5-10 RMAC), which misfired on 12 of its first 17 shots to open the game, then got it going on the offensive end as the Grizzlies answered with a 15-3 rally to take their first lead of the night at 26-25 after a Rylan O'Brien 3-pointer with 2:53 left in the period. ASU rattled off 10-straight points following the Schofield make, while the lone DSU field goal over that five-plus minute drought came on a Frank Staine trey that briefly halted the Grizzlies' run.

O'Brien would later convert a conventional 3-point play to spot his side a 29-27 advantage, but the Blazers got buckets from Jacob Nicolds and Andre Wilson in the final moments of the frame to take a 31-29 lead into the locker room.

ASU came out firing to start the second half, scoring eight-straight points after a Staine free throw to race out to a 37-32 lead. Dixie State battled back to pull even at 39-39 with an Andre Wilson trey, only to see O'Brien nail back-to-back perimeter jumpers of his own to push the Grizzlies back out to a 45-39 advantage at the 13:46 mark.

The Trailblazers would again chip away, eventually tying the game at 49-49 and again at 51 all following a Staine baseline drive and lay-in with 10 minutes remaining in regulation. However Dixie State could not regain the lead as Adams State extended back to a two-possession cushion at 60-54 after a Kaelin Crane jumper.

DSU managed to trim the deficit to 61-59 with a Jacob Nicolds bucket and free throw with 5:36 to go, but from there it was all Adams State, and more specifically Grizzly guard Szymon Walczak, who ultimately did the Blazers in. Walczak went on a personal 14-5 run against Dixie State over a span of 3:34, which culminated with a dagger 3-pointer that staked ASU to its biggest lead of the night at 75-64 with 2:02 on the clock.

Blazer guard Jack Pagenkopf counter-punched on Dixie State's next two possessions as he converted a rare four-point play on a made step-back 3-pointer and foul. The senior guard then hit another jumper and free throw, which pulled DSU to within four at 75-71 with 1:03 left.

However the deficit proved to be too much to overcome as Crane scored on ASU's next trip down the court, and the Grizzlies hit on 5-of-8 at the foul line to cinch the victory.

Pagenkopf led Dixie State with a team-high 20 points, 18 of which came after halftime, to go along with five assists. Schofield battled foul trouble most of the night as junior wound up with 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting before fouling out with just under six minutes to play.

DSU connected on 48.1 percent (26-of-54) from the floor, 31.3 percent (5-of-16) from the perimeter, and went 18-of-24 (.750) at the line. The Blazers also outrebounded ASU by a 33-25 margin, but was done in by a season-high 24 turnovers, 16 of which came in the first half.

O'Brien lead all scorers with 23 points, while Walczak poured in 17 of his 20 points in the second half. After its cold shooting start, ASU hit on 23 of its final 39 shots to finish the night at an even 50.0 percent (28-of-56). The Grizzlies also knocked down 7-of-22 (.318) from beyond the arc and went 19-of-28 (.679) at the charity stripe.

Dixie State wraps up its four-game road swing next weekend with return games at Western Colorado on Friday, Feb. 7, and at Colorado Mesa on Saturday, Feb. 8.
