Dixie State maintained its share of first place in the RMAC standings at the halfway point of the conference season thanks to a decisive 73-53 triumph over Regis on Saturday night inside the Burns Arena. The Trailblazers have now won three-straight to improve to 14-3 overall, 9-2 in RMAC play.
The Trailblazers broke open a back-and-forth first half with 10-straight points, which turned a 13-13 deadlock into a 23-13 DSU lead after a
Dason Youngblood jumper with 7:20 to go in the period.
Jack Pagenkopf kicked-started the run with a deep 3-pointer, while Youngblood poured in six of the Blazers' next seven points.
Regis (10-7/5-6 RMAC) trimmed the deficit down to nine at 29-20 following a Brian Dawson trey with a little over four minutes until halftime, however Dixie State countered with seven unanswered points to extend to a 36-20 advantage.
Josh Newbold and Pagenkopf banked home consecutive lay-ins, while
Andre Wilson sank a big perimeter jumper that all but took the wind out of the Rangers' sails.
Dixie State did not see its lead dip below 13 points over the two-plus minutes of the first half and the entire second half as the Trailblazers cruised home with their third-straight double-digit victory.
Hunter Schofield led three Trailblazers in double figures with 17 points on 6-of-8 shooting, while Pagenkopf added 14 points with seven rebounds, and game-highs of seven assists and four steals. Youngblood just missed his first collegiate double-double as the junior guard finished with 10 points and a game and career-high nine boards, to go with three dimes and a career-best four steals.
Dixie State connected on 51.0 percent (26-of-51) of its field goal attempts, 28.6 percent (4-of-14) from the perimeter, and sank 17-of-36 (.654) at the foul line. DSU also outrebounded the Rangers by a 38-34 margin and finished with 19 assists on its 26 made field goals. The Blazer defense held Regis to 32.7 percent (17-of-52) shooting on the night, including an 8-of-26 (.308) clip in the second half.
Toni Rocak paced the Rangers with a game-high 18 points and six rebounds.
Dixie State continues its homestand next weekend with two more RMAC games against Colorado Mesa on Friday, Jan. 24, and Western Colorado on Saturday, Jan. 25. Tip-off inside the Burns Arena for both games is slated for 7:30 p.m.
