Jarod Greene led three Trailblazers in double figures with a career-high 17 points as Dixie State opened a four-game homestand with an 84-73 victory over Colorado Christian Friday night in the Burns Arena. With the win, DSU (13-3) remained tied atop the RMAC standings at 8-2.
The Trailblazers led for all but about two minutes on the night and trailed just once at 12-11 with five-plus minutes gone on the clock. DSU quickly took the lead right back and never trailed again, extending a 13-point first half advantage after a
Dason Youngblood lay in before settling for a 47-37 cushion at the halftime break.
Dixie State maintained its double-digit advantage for most of the second frame and pushed its lead to as many as 19 points at 71-52 following an
Andre Wilson 3-pointer with 7:44 to go. However the Cougars (1-15/1-9 RMAC) would not go away quietly as CCU rattled off a 17-6 run, which culminated with a Spencer Hoffman trey that made it a 77-69 game with 1:48 to go.
That would be as close as the Cougars would get as the Blazers hit 7-of-10 at the foul line to close out the win.
Greene hit six of his seven shots from the floor and 5-of-6 at the line to go with four rebounds and one assist in 17 minutes. Meanwhile Wilson added 11 points off the bench on 4-of-6 shooting with a pair of 3-pointers, and
Jack Pagenkopf poured in 11 points with seven boards, five assists and two steals. In all, each of the 10 Trailblazers who saw time in the game scored at least three points.
Dixie State shot 47.4 percent (27-of-57) from the floor, which included a 5-of-12 night (.417) from the perimeter, and hit on 25-of-34 (.735) at the charity stripe.
Hoffman led all scorers with 24 points on 9-of-14 shooting, while Justin Engesser chipped in 14 points, 12 of which came from beyond the arc. CCU connected on 35.9 (23-of-64) from the floor, 25.0 percent (6-of-24) from 3-point country, and outrebounded DSU by a 43-39 count, including a 17-11 advantage on the offensive glass.
Dixie State continues its homestand Saturday night against Regis beginning at 7:30 p.m.
