Medina's Hat Trick Powers Trailblazers Past MSU Denver Sunday, 5-2

Moises Medina recorded his third-career hat trick as part of a five-goal barrage as the Dixie State men's soccer team rallied for a 5-2 RMAC victory over MSU Denver Sunday afternoon at Trailblazer Stadium.

DSU (2-3-1/1-1-0 RMAC) spotted the Roadrunners a 2-0 lead midway through the first half, with the first goal coming in the 18th-minute on a 30-yard blast from Yannick Schad. MSUD (3-3-0/1-1-1 RMAC) then struck 10-plus minutes later when Gianni Steijlen converted a penalty kick chance after a DSU foul inside the Trailblazer box.

From there it was all Dixie State as the Trailblazers scored five unanswered goals, including three tallies over the final 19 minutes of the opening frame to take a 3-2 lead at the halftime break. John Joseph headed home his first collegiate goal off a Daniel Brubaker cross in the 31st-minute to get DSU on the board, then Medina tied the game seven minutes later with a straight away 15-yard rocket on a ball played in by Sean Tucker from the left wing.

Medina would strike again for his second goal with 2:36 remaining in the period when took a Logan Beus feed and tucked in a shot from 7-yards out, and would add a big insurance goal with a penalty kick conversion of his own midway through the 66th-minute.

Dixie State then tacked on its final goal of the day with 3:22 to play when Matt Lockwood and Tony Foulger two-touched a ball to Guglielmo Bianchi, who finished with a 6-yard chip to ice the win.

Medina's hat trick was just the fifth in program history and the first since the senior achieved the feat twice in the 2017 season (at UCCS 9/11/17, vs. Point Loma 10/21/17). Former DSU great Jordan Roylance accounted for the other two hat tricks, both of which came during the 2009 season.

Dixie State will head out for a four-match RMAC road swing, which begins at Regis this Friday in Denver, followed by a match at UCCS on Sunday, Sept. 29.
