Dixie State kicked off its final season of Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play with a heartbreaking 1-0 overtime loss to in-state rival Westminster College Friday night at Trailblazer Stadium.
Both teams battled back-and-forth through a scoreless 90 minutes of regulation play, though it had looked like the Griffins (3-2-0/1-0-0 RMAC) managed to break through late in the 79
th-minute with the first goal of the night, but the Westminster was whistled for an offside infraction.
Dixie State (1-3-1/0-1-0 RMAC) had three good looks at a possible game-winner in the final seven minutes of regulation, the first came off the boot of
Carson Ecalono, but that chance was stopped by Griffin keeper Will Desantis in the 84
th-minute.
John Joseph would follow two minutes later with a shot that sailed high of the mark.
Then late in the 88
th-minute, the Blazers put together a rush into the Griffin zone, where
Idris Alabi took a cross and rocketed a shot at the Westminster goal, but again Desantis was there to make the stop to deny DSU the go-ahead score.
In the first overtime period, Dixie State was called for a tough foul deep inside its defensive 6-yard box to set up a penalty kick with 2:40 remaining on the clock. Griffin forward Danny Darelli stepped up and tucked home the chance to lift his side to the sudden victory result.
DSU lost despite outshooting Westminster by a 9-7 count, though the Griffins held a 5-4 edge in shots on frame. Senior netminder
Zach Nielson collected four saves for the Blazers defensively.
Dixie State wraps up its four-match homestand with a Sunday RMAC matinee vs. MSU Denver at Trailblazer Stadium beginning at 11 a.m.
