Dixie State closed its non-conference slate with a 1-1 draw against Texas A&M-International Sunday afternoon at Trailblazer Stadium.
Despite putting together several scoring chances in the opening 20 minutes of action, the Trailblazers found themselves in a 1-0 hole midway through the first half when TAMIU (3-0-1) broke through with a Charlie Michel goal in the 25
th-minute.
Dixie State (1-2-1) thought it had scored the equalizer on two occasions in the second half, but a
Moises Medina goal was negated by an offside call late in the 57
th-minute, which was the second of two goals cancelled out by offside calls on the day against DSU.
Then in the 73
rd-minute,
Gian Gargurevich got behind the Dustdevil defense and netted a point-blank shot, but the referee had blown the whistle for a TAMIU foul before the shot. The Blazers could not convert on the free kick just outside the Dustdevil box and remained a goal behind.
The Trailblazers finally punched in the equalizer with 13:12 to play in regulation when
Carson Ecalono played a ball from the left wing to
Matt Lockwood, who headed a shot past the TAMIU keeper to pull DSU even at 1-1.
DSU had two great looks at the golden goal in the opening five minutes of the first overtime period, but could not find the back of the net. In the third minute, Joseph rocketed a blast from 8-yards out on the right side of the frame, only to see Dustdevil keeper Josh Jones kick away the chance with a sprawling stop. Lockwood followed that up with a blast at the 4:26 mark, but again Jones made the save as both sides played out the two extra sessions scoreless.
The Blazers finished with nine shot attempts, six shots on goal, with Joseph (1 SOG) and Lockwood (3 SOG) accounting for six of the nine overall shots.
Zach Nielson collected six saves in goal DSU defensively.Â
Dixie State continues its homestand and begins its final season of RMAC play next weekend as the Blazers welcome Westminster College and MSU Denver to Trailblazer Stadium. DSU and Westminster will square off on Friday night, Sept. 20, at 7:30 p.m., before facing MSUD on Sunday at 11 a.m.
