Dixie State pushed its winning streak to three-straight after taking both ends of a split doubleheader on day two at the Lubbock Christian-hosted Chap Classic on Friday. The Trailblazers began the day with a 3-1 triumph over Southwestern Oklahoma State, then followed that up with a dominant 3-0 sweep of Pittsburg State in the nightcap.
After dropping a hard-fought first set to SWOSU (3-4) by a 28-26, the Trailblazers (3-3) came back with a 25-20 win in set two, then used a decisive 18-2 run, including the final 13 points overall, to roll to a 25-11 triumph in the third frame to open up a 2-1 lead in the match. Dixie took the lead for good at 4-2 in the fourth set, and after both teams traded side-outs late in the stanza, the Blazers scored three of the final four points to close out the win, 25-22.
Megan Treanor made DSU history in the win as she became the first player in the program's NCAA era to post a triple-double as she tallied a co-game high 14 kills with 18 assists and 11 digs. In addition, Treanor finished with three total blocks (1 solo) and two service aces for good measure.
Lizzy Clark also collected a career-high 14 kills, while
Lauren Gammell added a season-high 13 kills and hit .571 to go with three block assists, and
Jordyn Nelson has 30 assists, eight digs and two kills. DSU hit a season-best .307 in the match, including a .419 clip in set two and a whopping .581 in the third frame.
In the finale vs. Pittsburg State, the Trailblazers led wire-to-wire over the first two sets to vault to a quick 2-0 lead in the match. DSU rolled to a 25-14 win in the opening frame, which was followed by a 25-17 triumph in the second set.
The Blazers looked like they would coast to the sweep in the third as they opened up a 4-1 cushion. However the Gorillas (4-2-0) rallied with four-straight points to take their first lead of the match at 5-4 and would extend that advantage to as many as four points at 12-8.
Trailing 20-16 late in the frame, Dixie State took advantage of four PSU errors and got a clutch kill from
To'a Faleao to pull even at 21-21. Then after both teams traded side-outs, DSU scored the final three points of the match as Treanor picked up a kill that was bookended between two more Gorilla hitting errors, including a key attack block by both Faleao and Clark, as Dixie State closed out the match, 25-22.
Faleao and Treanor led DSU with 10 kills apiece, while Treanor was credited with 17 assists, and a career-high nine total blocks (2 solo) as the junior just missed her second-straight triple-double. Meanwhile, Gammell collected a game and season-high 10 total blocks (1 solo) to go with six kills as the Blazer defense held PSU to a -.010 hitting percentage and finished with a season-high 16 total blocks and 42 digs in the three sets.
Also of note, the match served as the 200
th-career match at DSU for Head Coach
Robyn Felder, who improved to 121-79 in her seven-plus years as Trailblazer mentor with the two wins on Friday.
The Trailblazers concludes tournament play on Saturday against host Lubbock Christian beginning at 10 a.m. (MT).
