PERFECT 10!! No. 9/13 Trailblazers Clip CSU-Pueblo Saturday Night, 81-69

Hunter Schofield poured in a career-high 28 points as No. 9/13 Dixie State pushed its season-opening win streak to 10-straight with an 81-69 road win at Colorado State-Pueblo Saturday night inside Massari Arena.

The first half featured two big runs, the first came from the Trailblazers (10-0/5-0 RMAC) as they rattled off a 16-2 rally, which turned an 11-7 deficit into a commanding 23-13 lead after a Cameron Chatwin transition lay-in at the 11:20 mark. Josh Newbold got the run started with a jumper, while Jack Pagenkopf and Dason Youngblood each hit 3-pointers and scored five points apiece in that stretch.

CSU-P (4-6/2-2 RMAC) quickly countered with nine-straight points to trim the Blazer advantage to 23-22, and would eventually regain the lead at 32-30 thanks to a pair of Brandon McGhee free throws. Schofield answered with two free throws of his own and a 3-pointer to give DSU the lead right back at 35-32. The two sides would then trade scores the rest of the period, with the ThunderWolves taking a 38-37 lead into the halftime break.

The second 20 minutes belonged to Dixie State as the Trailblazers began the frame with a decisive 19-5 run, including nine-straight points on the back-end of the rally, to race to a 56-43 lead with 13:31 to play. CSU-Pueblo stopped the run with a David Simental bucket, but Chatwin countered with back-to-back lay-ins to give DSU its biggest lead of the night at 60-45.

Dixie State maintained a double-digit cushion from there until a Jaedon Bowles 3-pointer pulled the ThunderWolves to within nine at 76-67 with 2:25 left. However Schofield would deliver the dagger blow on DSU's ensuing possession as he hit a trey of his own from the top of the key and the Trailblazers cruised home from there to clinch a huge RMAC road sweep.

Schofield scored 16 of his 28 points in the second half, while the junior hit on 11 of his 21 field goal attempts on the night to go with a game-high nine rebounds. Youngblood added 13 points along with a career-high eight boards and four assists, and Chatwin and Pagenkopf chipped in nine points apiece.

Dixie State shot 50.7 percent (35-of-69) from the floor, including a 7-of-17 (.412) effort from the perimeter. The Trailblazers won despite going to the foul line a season-low nine time (4-of-9, .444), though DSU outrebounded CSU-P 40-34.

McGhee paced four ThunderWolves players in double figures with 14 points. CSU-P shot 41.0 percent (25-of-61) on the night, which included a paltry 5-of-21 (.238) from beyond the arc.

Dixie State wraps up the non-conference portion of its 2019-20 regular season slate with a matinee at Western Oregon on Friday, Dec. 20. Tip-off is slated for 3 p.m. (PT), in the WOU New PE Building.
