Pagenkopf's Triple-Double Leads DSU's Men Past UT-Tyler in OT Saturday, 100-91

Jack Pagenkopf recorded the first triple-double in Dixie State's NCAA era, while six Trailblazers scored in double figures on the night, as the Trailblazers picked up a hard-fought 100-91 overtime victory over UT-Tyler on day two of the 2019 D2 Conference Challenge Saturday inside Westminster College's Behnken Fieldhouse in Salt Lake City.

The Trailblazers (2-0) bolted out of the gate with a 12-2 run thanks to six quick Hunter Schofield points and four more from Pagenkopf as DSU hit five of its first six shots to open the game.

UT-Tyler would counter with a run of its own later in the frame as the Patriots erased a 16-7 deficit with a 20-4 spurt to race to a 27-20 advantage. Ty Glover, who scored 16 of his game-high 34 in the first half, got the run started with a thunderous dunk and he would hit the last of three Patriot 3-pointers in the rally to give his side the seven-point lead.

Frank Staine came back with a 3-pointer to end the rally, then after two UTT free throws, the Blazers scored 10-straight points to wrestle the lead back at 33-29 with 5:27 to play in the period. Jacob Nicolds and Jarod Greene combined for all 10 points as the low-post duo each converted on conventional three-point plays, with Greene's lay-up and free throw capping the run. Both sides then traded scores the rest of the frame as DSU took a 44-40 lead into the halftime break.

Dixie State led virtually the entire second half, but could not get any separation from the Patriots. With the game tied at 60-60, the Trailblazers looked as if they would begin to pull away with seven-straight points as part of an 11-3 run to open up a 71-63 cushion with just under nine minutes to play.

Greene scored five of DSU's 11 points in the run, while Schofield added four, including a pair of free throws to give the Blazers their largest lead of the half. However UT-Tyler (0-2) kept within striking distance and would make a one-possession game again at 77-74 after Glover's second 4-point play of the frame.

After two more Schofield free throws made it an 81-76 game with 2:17 left, the Patriots rattled off eight-straight points, five of which came off the hot shooting hand of Glover, including a transition lay-in that UT-Tyler its first lead of the second half at 83-81 with 41 seconds remaining.

Dixie State missed a shot on its ensuing possession and was forced to foul. Patriot guard Micah Fuller hit the first foul shot, but missed the second, and the rebound fell into the hands of Pagenkopf, who crossed the timeline and hit a clutch 3-pointer from 25 feet out to tie the game at 84-84 and force overtime.

The overtime period was all Trailblazers as DSU scored 11-straight points to open the stanza and would coast home from there to pick up the win.

After going for 20 points in his Trailblazer debut in Friday night's win over Texas A&M-Commerce (71-66), Schofield posted his first double-double of the season with a team-high 22 points and 10 rebounds. The junior hit on 9-of-14 from the floor and added two assists and a block to final stat line.

Meanwhile Pagenkopf notched career-highs across the board with his triple-double as he finished with 17 points on 7-of-13 shooting to go with 13 rebounds and 10 assists. Greene added 15 points off the bench on 5-of-7 from the floor, while Dason Youngblood scored seven of his career-high 13 points in overtime, and Staine and Josh Newbold tallied 10 points apiece.

Dixie State shot better than 50 percent in both halves and connected on 4-of-5 shots in overtime to finish the night 38-of-68 (.559) from the field. However the Blazers were just 2-of-14 (.143) from the perimeter, though they did hit on 22-of-33 (.667) from the foul line. DSU also outrebounded UT-Tyler 47-34 and finished with 21 assists to just 14 turnovers.

The Trailblazers open their 14-game home slate next weekend as hosts of the 2019 Dixie State Classic in the Burns Arena. DSU will open the tourney with an exhibition game vs. Providence (MT) University on Friday, Nov. 15, at 7:30 p.m., followed by a match-up vs. Saint Martin's on Saturday, Nov. 16, at 8 p.m.
