Hunter Schofield led five Trailblazers in double figures with 16 points, while
Jack Pagenkopf just missed his second triple-double of the year, as Dixie State rolled past Lake Superior State in the opening game of the Westminster College Classic Friday night inside Behnken Fieldhouse.
The Trailblazers (4-0) scored 16-straight points as part of a decisive 31-10 run over a span of nearly eight minutes, which turned a 9-9 tie in to a 40-19 DSU lead with 7:00 minutes to play in the opening half.
Dixie State would extend that advantage to as many as 25 points at 48-23, before taking a 50-33 lead into the halftime break. DSU never saw its lead dip below 13 points as the Blazers cruised to their 17
th-straight regular season victory.
Schofield scored nine of his 16 points in the first half and finished with six rebounds and two assists. Meanwhile Pagenkopf tallied 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting with game-highs of 10 rebounds and nine assists, and
Frank Staine added 15 points on 6-of-10 from the floor with four boards.
Andre Wilson added a season-high 12 points with a pair of 3-pointers and four assists off the bench, and
Cameron Chatwin finished with a season-best 13 points in 19 reserve minutes.
Dixie State enjoyed one of its better overall shooting nights on the young season as the Blazers shot an even 50.0 percent (35-of-70) from the floor, including a season-best 40.9 percent clip (9-of-22) from the perimeter. DSU also connected on a season-high 84.2 percent (16-of-19) at the foul line and outrebounded the Lakers by a 46-27 count, including a 12-3 edge on the offensive glass.
Lake Superior State (1-3) forward Ke'Montrece Collins led all scorers with 20 points on 8-of-11 from the field. The Lakers shot 41.7 percent for the game (25-of-60), 7-of-24 (.292) from beyond the arc.
The Trailblazers will conclude play at the Westminster Classic with a match-up vs. Alaska-Fairbanks on Saturday night at 5:30 p.m.
