Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | by DSU Athletic Media Relations

Trailblazers Top Alaska Fairbanks Saturday Night, 90-78

No. 22 Dixie State used a big second half run and got a career-high 27 points from junior guard Dason Youngblood as the Trailblazers topped Alaska Fairbanks, 90-78, in game three of the Westminster College Classic Saturday night inside Behnken Fieldhouse.

With the win, the Trailblazers improved to 5-0 on the season, marking the second time in the program's NCAA era that Dixie State has won its first five games to open a season.

That win streak looked like it was in jeopardy in the early going as DSU misfired on seven of its first eight shots in falling behind the Nanooks (1-5) by a 7-2 count. However the Blazers would shake off the cold start by hitting eight of their next nine from the floor, which helped kick start a 23-8 run to bolt out to a 25-15 advantage with 8:12 to play in the period. DSU would not relinquish its lead the rest of the frame and enjoyed a 46-41 cushion at the halftime break.

The second half started eerily similar to how the game began as DSU was outscored 7-2 by the Nanooks, who drew even at 48-48 after a Mawich Kaachjaani bucket and free throw at the 18:15 mark.

However that would be the last basket UAF would score over the next nine-plus minutes as Dixie State rattled off a decisive 19-1 run, which culminated with back-to-back 3-pointers from Cameron Chatwin and Frank Staine, to take a commanding 67-49 lead with 9:18 remaining.

Youngblood scored nine of DSU's 19 points in the run, including seven-straight at one point, and the Blazers never saw that lead dip below a two-possession advantage the rest of the way.

Youngblood poured in 19 of his 27 points after halftime and finished the night 12-of-17 from the field with three assists and three rebounds. Staine added 14 points, while Hunter Schofield chipped in 10 points with five boards and three blocks, and Chatwin just missed a double-double as he tallied eight points with a team-high 10 rebounds.

Dixie State shot 55.6 percent (35-of-63) from the floor, which included a 31.8 percent effort (7-of-22) from the perimeter, and held a 38-36 rebounding edge.

Nanook guard Shadeed Shabazz led all scorers with 28 points on 9-of-18 shooting. UAF shot 39.7 percent for the game (25-of-63), 10-of-30 (.333) from beyond the arc.

Dixie State will open its final season of RMAC play next Saturday night against in-state rival Westminster College. Tip-off inside the Burns Arena is slated for 7:30 p.m.
