Dixie State closed the road portion of its 2019 regular season slate with a 2-0 result over Westminster College Friday afternoon at Dumke Field. The road victory, DSU's seventh of the season and sixth in RMAC play, moved the Trailblazers (9-7-1) into at a two-way tie for fourth place in the conference table (8-5-0, 24 points) with Colorado Mesa (7-3-3, 24 points) heading into Sunday's regular season finale.
DSU opened the scoring midway through 21
st-minute when freshman
AJ Abbadessa notched his first collegiate point on a feed to senior
Moises Medina, who promptly tucked home his team-leading ninth goal of the season to put the Blazers up 1-0. For Medina, it was also his record 32
nd-career goal and his record 14
th game-winning score.
The Trailblazers made that one goal stand as DSU held the Griffins (10-5-2/8-3-2 RMAC) at bay over the next 66-plus minutes of play. Westminster got off four shots on goal over that period, but senior goalkeeper
Zach Nielson was up to the challenge, including a clutch diving stop on a Brody Nelson chance in the 59
th-minute, while Preston McIllece had a header sail just wide of the mark in the 66
th-minute.
Then with just over three minutes to play in regulation time, Medina led an odd-man rush and flicked a pass to his left to sophomore
Cole Shaffer, who blasted home his first collegiate goal from 25-yards out with 3:02 remaining. Dixie State survived on more Griffin shot in the final moments before celebrating its third-straight win.
Dixie State was outshot 14-13, though both sides finished with five shots on frame. Nielson made five saves on his way to his 30
th-career win in goal and his 10
th-career clean sheet overall.
Dixie State will wrap up the 2019 regular season with a "Senior Day" match vs. Colorado Christian inside Trailblazer Stadium this Sunday, Nov. 3, at 1:30 p.m.
