Dixie State saw its three-match winning streak come to a heartbreaking end as the Trailblazers came out on the short end of a 1-0 decision at Colorado Mesa Friday night at Walker Field.
After being locked in a defensive standoff for more than 80 minutes of play, the Mavericks (6-1-1/4-0-1 RMAC) broke through on the second of consecutive corner kicks with 7:01 to play in regulation with the game's first goal. CMU had two looks at a goal on the first corner attempt, but DSU keeper
Zach Nielson made a pair incredible saves to keep the Mavericks at bay. However CMU striker Tristan Widic tucked in a shot on the second corner try to put his side up 1-0.
Dixie State (4-4-1/3-2-0 RMAC) had three chances for the equalizer in the final two minutes of play, the first came when
Idris Alabi drew a foul in the CMU box to set up a penalty kick.
Moises Medina stepped up and rocketed a shot toward the right post, but Maverick netminder Brendan Brown apparently made a diving save on the attempt.
However the referee ruled that Brown came forward too early and awarded the Trailblazers another penalty try. Alabi took the try, but again Brown would deny the chance as he made a sprawling deflection to his right to keep DSU off the board.
Gian Gargurevich collected the carom on the Brown save and flicked a shot toward the net, however the Maverick keeper managed to recover to make that stop, resulting in a DSU corner.
Matt Lockwood received the corner and got off the Blazers' final shot, only to see Brown deflect that attempt and the Mavericks ran out the clock from there to get the win.
Both teams finished with 16 shots apiece, though DSU held a 9-7 edge in shots on goal. Nielson finished with six saves in a losing effort for the Blazers.
Dixie State wraps up its four-match RMAC road swing Sunday afternoon in Durango with a match at Fort Lewis at 2:30 p.m.
