No. 18 Baseball Rolls Past Academy of Art in Series Opener, 12-3

File goes the distance to move into a tie atop DSU's career victories list

No. 18 Dixie State opened its final homestand of the 2017 regular season on a winning note as the Trailblazers rolled past Academy of Art, 12-3, in Pacific West Conference action Thursday night at Bruce Hurst Field.

DSU (26-9/15-6 PacWest) jumped out to a quick 2-0 first inning lead as Trey Kamachi (Kapolei, Hawai'i/Kapolei HS) and Logan Porter (Surprise, Ariz./Valley Vista HS) each drove in runs on RBI fly outs to open the scoring. Meanwhile, junior righthander Dylan File (St. George, Utah/Desert Hills HS) was dealing early as he retired seven-straight and nine of the first 10 Urban Knight batters he faced.

However AAU (13-22/9-12 PacWest) managed to get to File in the fourth when Izac Bauer cashed in a lead-off walk with a two-run home run to left field to knot the score at 2-2. Dixie State came back with a run in the home half of the frame with another Porter sacrifice fly, but the Urban Knights again pulled even at 3-3 with a run in the fifth.

From that point on it was all Trailblazers as Dixie State scored nine unanswered runs over the next four innings to put the game out of reach. Baker got the rally going with a clutch two-run double in the fifth, while Jake Davison (Taylorsville, Utah/Taylorsville HS) collected an RBI-double in the sixth to give DSU a three-run cushion.

The Trailblazers then erupted for four runs in the seventh to vault to a 10-3 advantage. Dixie State sent 10 batters to the plate in the stanza, which featured a two-run triple from Kamachi, a Porter RBI-ground out and a bases-loaded walk to Trey Reineke (Aurora, Colo./Smoky Hill HS). Tyler Mildenberg (Huntington Beach, Calif./Marina HS) then put an exclamation point on the night with his sixth homer of the season, a two-run, eighth-inning blast to right field.

Meanwhile File (W, 6-1) bounced back to retire 14 of the final 16 Urban Knights he faced, including seven-straight after a two-out AAU hit in the seventh, to notch his third complete game of the season. File struck out six on the night, while the DSU defense played innings of spotless baseball, as the junior recorded his 18th-career victory, which moved him into a tie atop DSU's NCAA-era career victories list (Mike Dedrick, 2011-13). File also vaulted into sole possession of third place on DSU's career complete games list with his fifth over his near three-year collegiate career.

Baker and Kamachi paced the Trailblazer offense with three hits apiece and a combined five RBI as DSU outhit AAU 12-6, while Kamachi became just the second player in DSU's NCAA-era to reach the 200 career-hit plateau, joining teammate Drew McLaughlin (Scottsdale, Ariz./Desert Mountain HS) on the list. Porter finished with three RBI without benefit of a hit or walk, which snapped his 31-game streak of reaching base safely.

The two teams will continue their four-game series with a doubleheader Friday at 2 p.m., at Bruce Hurst Field.
