No. 18 Dixie State was treated to a pair of complete-game shutouts from senior righthander
Mason Hilty (Richland, Wash./Richland HS) and junior southpaw
Matt Mosca (Las Vegas, Nev./Cimarron Memorial HS) as the Trailblazers took both ends of a Friday doubleheader from Pacific West Conference foe Academy of Art at Bruce Hurst Field. DSU (28-9/17-6 PacWest) pounded out 14 hits en route to a convincing 11-0 win in game one, while the Trailblazers clinched the overall series victory with a 5-0 triumph in the seven-inning nightcap.
The Trailblazers scored runs in each of the first four innings in the opener to race out to a commanding 9-0 lead. DSU took advantage of three of the Urban Knights' seven errors in the game to plate three runs in the first inning, then cashed in two more AAU miscues that set up another run which came on a
Tyler Baker (Las Vegas, Nev./Bishop Gorman HS) RBI-single in the second stanza.
Dixie State tallied another run in the third as
Miles Bice (Henderson, Nev./Coronado HS) singled home
Tyler Mildenberg (Huntington Beach, Calif./Marina HS), who singled and moved into scoring position on a passed ball, before erupting for four runs in the fourth frame to extend to its nine-run cushion.
Trey Kamachi (Kapolei, Hawai'i/Kapolei HS) drove in a run to begin the rally, while Mildenberg plated two more with a triple to straight-away centerfield.
Jake Davison (Taylorsville, Utah/Taylorsville HS) would then bring home Mildenberg one batter later.
The early run support was more than enough for Hilty (W, 8-1), who needed only 92 pitches to post his second straight complete-game victory and a school-record tying second nine-inning shutout win of the season (with teammate
Dylan File (St. George, Utah/Desert Hills HS)). Hilty, who has surrendered just one unearned run over his last 18 innings overall, struck out four and scattered six hits and one walk, while the Trailblazers played spotless defense behind him.
Hilty's victory, his 18
th in a DSU uniform, also moved into a tie for first place on DSU's NCAA-era career victories list with teammate
Dylan File (St. George, Utah/Desert Hills HS), who himself reached 18-win plateau with his complete-game effort in the AAU series opener Thursday night, and with former DSU hurler
Mike Dedrick (2011-13).
Baker paced the DSU offense with three hits and two runs scored, while Mildenberg and Bice each collected two hits and two RBI.
Meanwhile, the seven AAU errors tied for the second-most errors committed by a Dixie State opponent in the program's NCAA-era and were the most since Minot State made six errors in a game back in the 2015 season (2/15).
DSU kept the momentum going in the nightcap as the Trailblazers tallied single runs in the second and third frames to take a 2-0 lead.
Reece Lucero (Albuquerque, N.M./La Cueva HS) opened the scoring with an RBI-single in the second, while Mildenberg drove in his third run of the day with a sacrifice fly in the third.
Drew McLaughlin (Scottsdale, Ariz./Desert Mountain HS) then broke the game open with a two-run double in the fourth as he plated Lucero and pinch runner
Trey Reineke (Aurora, Colo./Smoky Hill HS) with one out in the stanza. Bice then tacked on an insurance run in the fifth with an RBI-single to left field.
Mosca (W, 5-1), who held AAU to just three hits over his first three innings of work, retired 11-straight Urban Knights over his middle three innings, though Academy of Art (13-24/9-14 PacWest) managed to load the bases with two outs in the seventh on a pair of hits and a two-out walk. However Mosca rallied to strike out AAU outfielder Taj Dawson to end the game.
McLaughlin and Lucero each collected two hits as DSU rapped out nine safeties in game two. Meanwhile Baker, who reached base twice on a single and a walk, tied DSU's single-game record with three stolen bases, which was originally set by former DSU player
Aaron Friend, coincidentally against Academy of Art back in the 2009 season (3/17). Baker's three steals also moved him atop DSU's single-season steals list, passing McLaughlin (15, 2016) and Friend (15, 2009) for the top spot.
Mosca finished with three strikeouts in his first complete game victory in a Trailblazer uniform, while the DSU defense matched the effort as the unit posted its third-straight errorless game in the series.
DSU two complete games Friday, coupled with File's complete-game effort in Thursday's series opener, set a new four-year era program record for consecutive complete games against NCAA competition.
Dixie State will go for the series sweep as the two teams wrap up the four-game series Saturday at 12 noon at Bruce Hurst Field. Saturday's finale will also serve as Senior Day as 14 Trailblazers will be in uniform for their final regular season home game.
