No. 13 Baseball Rolls Past Saint Martin's, 10-3

Feist collects career-high four hits, Hilty solid in his third start of the year

Bryce Feist (Emmett, Idaho/Rocky Mountain HS) collected a career-high four hits and senior righthander Mason Hilty (Richland, Wash./Richland HS) posted a solid outing to help lead No. 13 Dixie State to a 10-3 victory over Saint Martin's Sunday afternoon at Bruce Hurst Field.

DSU (8-3) led wire-to-wire as the Trailblazers took a 2-0 first inning lead without benefit of a hit, thanks to a pair of bases loaded walks from SMU starter Mickey Walker (L, 0-1), who walked four and hit a batter in the frame. Dixie State tacked on another run in the second when Trey Kamachi (Kapolei, Hawai'i/Kapolei HS) doubled home Feist, who singled to lead off the stanza, to pad the DSU lead to 3-0.

After SMU (0-3) got one of those runs back in the fourth, the Trailblazers plated one run in the fifth on a Logan Porter (Surprise, Ariz./Valley Vista HS) RBI-single, then broke the game open with three runs in the sixth to vault to a 7-1 advantage. Feist started the rally with a lead-off single, then after a Drew McLaughlin (Scottsdale, Ariz./Desert Mountain HS) double, Tyler Mildenberg (Huntington Beach, Calif./Marina HS) singled up the middle to drive in Feist. Following a Kamachi sacrifice to advance Mildenberg, Porter stepped up and laid down a two-run suicide squeeze bunt, which plated both McLaughlin from third and Mildenberg, who broke on contact from second and scored standing up.

The Saints would pull to within 7-3 with two runs in the seventh, but DSU answered with a three-run home half of the frame to extend to a seven-run advantage. Feist and McLaughlin each drove in runs on base hits, while Mildenberg capped the rally with a run-scoring flyout.

The run support was more than enough for Hilty (W, 2-1), who scattered eight hits and two earned runs (three total) over 6.2 innings to earn his second win in three starts to open his season, while three relievers combined to limit SMU to just two hits over the final 2.1 innings to close out the game.

DSU pounded out 10 hits on the day, including two safeties from McLaughlin to complement Feist's career day, while Porter finished with three RBI.

Dixie State continues its homestand next weekend as the Trailblazers welcome Montana State-Billings to Bruce Hurst Field for a three-game series Feb. 24-26.
