Dixie State's men's and women's soccer teams entertained nearly 1,000 fans Saturday night as the Storm welcomed the Real Salt Lake women's club team and Real Monarchs for the Southern Utah Soccer Showcase exhibition at Hansen Stadium.
The DSU women took the field first and put together a dominant performance in posting a 4-0 result, which was highlighted by a hat trick off the boot of senior
Jasmine Arollo (Glendale, Ariz./Apollo HS). In fact, Arollo had a hand in all four Storm goals in the match as she registered an assist on the first tally late in the fifth minute, which was scored by junior
Aubri Detmer (Austin, Texas/Lake Travis HS), who played a carom off an RSL defender on an Arollo corner kick and beat the RSL keeper to give DSU a 1-0 lead.
Arollo struck for her first goal near the end of the 18
th minute as she beat two defenders and banged a shot off the far post and into the goal to spot the Storm with a two-goal advantage. Arollo then found the back of the net two more times in the second half. She got past the RSL defense on a feed from freshman
Jordyn Goodrich (West Jordan, Utah/Riverton HS) and scored from 20-yards out in the 67
th minute, then clinched the hat trick nearly 11 minutes later as junior
Courtney Fryer (Spanish Fork, Utah/Maple Mountain HS) secured a loose ball and found Arollo, who chipped the ball past the keeper to register the match's final goal.
DSU outshot the RSL Women 28-6 in the match, including a 17-2 edge on frame. DSU keepers
Stacie Gubler (Las Vegas, Nev./Palo Verde HS) and
Danica Nusink (Springville, Utah/Springville HS) each registered one save in posting the shutout.
The Storm men then took the field for their eagerly anticipated match-up with the USL's Real Monarchs, and the fans were not disappointed with the action on the pitch. Especially in the game's first 90 seconds as Dixie State scored a quick goal scored by senior
Jorge Echavarria (Oakley, Calif./Alhambra HS), which was set up by a strong throw into the 6-yard box by senior
Bryan Baugh (Henderson, Nev./Green Valley HS).
However the lead was short-lived as the Monarchs struck for the equalizer early in the 13
th minute as Emery Welshman corralled a through-ball from Eta Tavares, then sidestepped DSU keeper
Bradley Trella (Chandler, Ariz./Chandler HS) and tucked home the ball to knot the score at 1-1. The Monarchs then took a 2-1 advantage nearly three minutes later as a strong throw-in resulted in an own goal as a scrum for possession led to the ball trickling off a Storm defender and into the DSU goal.
Dixie State hung with the Monarchs from that point forward as the Storm played well defensively, while the DSU offense had its chances, but the Monarchs speed and skill kept the Storm at bay.
The match remained a one-goal affair until the 81
st minute when Edgar Duran fired home a free kick on the left wing from 25-yards out to extend the Monarch advantage to 3-1. DSU did not go away quietly as
Austin Azevedo (Meridian, Idaho/Mountain View HS) secured a deflected free kick and found the back of the net with 15 seconds to play to draw the Storm to within a goal at 3-2. But that would be as close as they would get as the Monarchs maintained possession and ran out the clock to secure the win.
The Monarchs enjoyed a 16-6 edge in shots, including a 6-4 edge on goal. Senior
Ryan Brubaker (Hurricane, Utah/Hurricane HS) finished with two saves, while Trella made one stop. Monarch keeper Eric Osswald made two saves and Welshman led the club with five shot attempts.
Both Dixie State teams will open up Pacific West Conference play this Thursday against Azusa Pacific at Hansen Stadium. The Storm women will kick off the twin bill at 4:30 p.m., followed by the men at 7 p.m.
