Early offense sends Dixie State to its 13th straight win

Storm open series with CBU with 9-4 victory

ST. GEORGE, Utah – Despite allowing the most hits to an opponent in a single game this season, the ninth-ranked Dixie State baseball team extended their winning streak to 13 games with a 9-4 victory over California Baptist on Thursday night at Bruce Hurst Field.

The Red Storm scored in the each of the first four innings and rode that momentum to improve to 25-8 on the season and 20-1 in the Pacific West.

Dylan File (St. George, UT/Desert Hills) started on the mound and went 5.2 innings. He allowed three runs in 12 hits, walked two and struck out three to earn the winning decision (5-1).

"His (File's) fastball leaked a little higher than we would like and he gave up some hits," DSU head coach Chris Pfatenhauer said. "What helped him out is that we didn't make any mistakes behind him."

The visiting Lancers (20-15, 12-5 PacWest) had five hits in the opening inning, but were held to just one run thanks to a timely File strikeout and Trey Kamachi (Kapolei, HI/Kapolei) gunning down a runner trying to score from second on a base hit.

Dixie State quickly responded with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Cam Gust (Riverton, UT/Riverton) snuck a double down the right field line scoring Drew McLaughlin (Scottsdale, AZ/Desert Mountain) and Kevin Kline (Las Vegas, NV/Rancho).

Gust added his third RBI with a sacrifice fly plating Donald Glover (Las Vegas, NV/Legacy) in the third inning.

The Storm scored three more times in the fourth inning to build a 7-2 advantage. McLaughlin bounced a single through the right side to plate Sam Hall (Ogden, UT/Bonneville) and Glover doubled off the wall in left center to score two more.

File was able to keep a potent CBU offense to single runs in the third and fifth frames. Kolton Brost (Monsa, UT/Payson) and Rustin Sveum (Scottsdale, AZ/Desert Mountain) combined to throw the final 3.1 innings of the game. Brost stymied a rally in the CBU eighth inning after loading the bases with one out by inducing a pair of foul outs. The Lancers left 14 runners on base for the game.

Four DSU players had two hits – Tanner Morache (Surrey, Canada/Surrey), McLaughlin, Glover and Gust. Glover and Gust each had a pair of doubles.

A.J. David and Stephen Lohr each had four hits a piece for the Lancers. Antonio Chavarria hit his sixth round tripper of the season, a solo shot.

The Storm and Lancers will play a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m. on Friday.
