DSU soccer falls 3-1 in Salt Lake

Neutral site match with Northwest Nazarene ends non-league action

Box Score SALT LAKE CITY – The Dixie State men's soccer team traveled up north for a rare appearance Tuesday for a non-conference match. After securing the opening goal of the match, the Red Storm were unable to capitalize on multiple chances on goal, dropping a 3-1 decision to Northwest Nazarene on the campus of Westminster College.

"This one hurts," DSU head coach Danny Ortiz (Las Vegas, NV/Cimarron) said. "We played very well and still came up short.

The Storm (0-3-1) took a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute when Jorge Echavarria (Las Vegas, NV/Sierra Vista) header met the net after a throw in from Bryan Baugh (Henderson, NV/Green Valley).

Unfortunately, the lead was short lived. Sixty-five second later, the Crusaders (3-1) scored off a corner kick. The teams ended the half knotted up at 1-1.

In the 68th minute, a foul on the Storm set up NNU for a free kick just outside the box. Julio Castillo took the free kick and perfectly set up Erik Anderson for the go-ahead goal. The Crusaders added an insurance goal in the final minute on a breakaway.

"We did not give a clean shot on goal, yet the ball still found the net," Ortiz said.

NNU outshot the Red Storm 12-10 for the match despite an even 7-7 tally in the second half.  Ethan VandenBosch (South Ogden, UT/Bonneville) and Michael Gray (Las Vegas, NV/Bishop Gorman) paced DSU taking a combined seven of the team's total shots.

Spencer Anderson (Glendale, AZ/Mountain View) played in goal for the first half and made two saves while Eddie Ortiz (Las Vegas, NV/Cimarron) surrendered a pair of goals over the final 45 minutes to take the losing decision.

Dixie State returns home on September 27 to open Pacific West Conference play against California Baptist at 10 a.m.

"We have 10 days before our next match," Ortiz added. "And I have to make sure we are ready for conference play to begin."
