ROAD TO SAN DIEGO: With less than a month left before the PacWest Basketball Tournament, the Road to San Diego is even more crowded than ever. The race for the six tournament slots in both the men's and women's fields are tight with several crucial games upcoming this week. The 2014 PacWest Basketball Tournament will be held March 6-8 at Point Loma's Golden Gymnasium.

In the women's field, Academy of Art remained at the top with another dominating win. The Urban Knights lead No. 2 Hawaii Pacific by three full games.  HPU won both its contests this past week, including a victory over California Baptist last Monday.  CBU, at No. 3, is two games behind HPU in the loss column after going 1-1.

Dixie State won its only game this past week to remain at No. 4.  Dominican continued its recent surge with a victory in its only game of the week and moved up to the No. 5 spot.  Hawaii Hilo dropped to No. 6 seed, two games ahead of Chaminade.

PACWEST FINAL 5: Haley Holmstead (American Fork, UT/American Fork) won the battle of the league's top-two scorers with 38 points against Sonia Aguilar and Holy Names. She shot 14-for-21 from the field and 10-of-12 from the free throw line. She has made double-digit field goals in three of the last six games.

ALL-TIME vs. UHH: DSU leads the all-time series 13-2, including a nine-game win streak. The last victory came on Jan. 2, 2014 in Hilo, Hawaii. DSU has never lost to the Vulcans in the Burns Arena.

LAST TIME AGAINST the VULCANS: The Dixie State University women's basketball team started 2014 in the right way on Thursday night with a 67-63 Pacific West Conference victory at University of Hawaii at Hilo. The win was the departments 1,000 in the seven and half years that DSU has been a NCAA Division II member. Four players Red Storm (4-6/2-2 PWC) scored in double figures, including 18 points from Haley Holmstead (American Fork, UT/American Fork). Both Taylor Mann (Castle Dale, UT/Emery) (11 points and 10 rebounds) and Nanea Woods (Portland, OR/St. Mary's Academy) (14 points and 12 rebounds) registered double-doubles for the first time in their Dixie State careers. DSU took advantage of the Vulcans (3-6/2-3 PWC) on the boards 58-41, including a game high 14 rebounds from Haileigh Emerine (Spanish Fork, UT/Spanish Fork).  The Red Storm opened up its largest lead of the game with 9:11 left when Brianna White (Phoenix, AZ/Tolleson Union) connected from downtown to give them a 13 point advantage. The Vulcans responded by cutting the DSU lead to 45-39 at intermission. In the second half, Kaylah Miller (San Diego, CA/La Jolla Country Day) scored 12 of her 15 points by connecting on three shots from behind the arc. UH Hilo cut the DSU lead to one point twice in the second half, the first time came at 49-48 with 13:41 remaining. But an 8-0 run capped off by a Miller three pointer built the Storm lead back to eight points. The last time the Vulcans shaved the lead, was at 58-57 with 5:15 left. But another 5-0 run that included three free throws from Miller helped to secure the DSU victory. The Red Storm shot just 4-30 from the field in the second half, with three of the baskets three pointers by Miller. The rest of the DSU points came at the foul line (11-18). Despite the dismal second half shooting, the Red Storm finished at 33.3 percent from the field.

SCOUTING HAWAII HILO: Hilo enters tonight's contest with a 6-11 overall record and 5-8 PWC mark and they have lost five games in a row. They are led by Kamie Imai who is averaging 11.7 ppg and also leads the team in rebounding at 7.8 rpg. Junior guard Kirstie Williams also chips in 10 points per game. The Vulcans average 64.2 ppg and shoot 36.7 percent from the field and 28.2 percent from behind the arc.

LAST TIME OUT: Haley Holmstead (American Fork, UT/American Fork) showed why she is the Pacific West Conference leading scorer as she nailed a game winner with seven-seconds to lead Dixie State University women's basketball to a 62-60 win over BYU Hawaii in the Burns Arena. Holmstead finished the game with 20 points, just under her season average to lead the Red Storm (10-11/8-7 PWC) to the much needed win. BYUH led most of the first half, using an 8-0 run to build a 25-17 lead, but DSU followed with a 19-1 run to close the half and take halftime advantage. Leading 40-29 at the half, the Red Storm looked to have the game on cruise control until the Seasiders (2-18/2-13 PWC) battled back from 11 points down and tied the game with a Jiashan Cui three pointer with 16.7 seconds left. After shaving the deficit to one point at 44-43, both teams went over five minutes without scoring a basket. Rebounder became the difference down the stretch, as the DSU took the 54-43 advantage and capitalized by scoring 23 second chance points. DSU had 21 offensive rebounds. Taylor Mann (Castle Dale, UT/Emery) grabbed 19 rebounds and fell just one rebound short of a single game record of 20. She also added 10 points for her sixth double-double of the season against her old team. Haileigh Emerine (Spanish Fork, UT/Spanish Fork) also grabbed 12 rebounds and Brianna White (Phoenix, AZ/Tolleson Union) sparked the Red Storm off the bench with 14 points.

RED STORM NOTES: DSU looks to build on its two game win streak and make three with a win over Hawaii Hilo tonight.  The Red Storm enters the contest with a 10-11 overall record and a 8-7 PWC mark. They are looking to get back to .500 for the first time since the final game of the Hawaiian road swing. Leading the way is PWC scoring leader Haley Holmstead (American Fork, UT/American Fork), she averages 22.3 ppg after her 20 point performance against BYU Hawaii.

Dixie State shoots 37.4 percent from the field, 26.3 percent from three-point range, and 71.7 percent from the free-throw line. They continue to score (72.9 ppg) at will, but the defense has been the thorn in the heel. They allow 76.81 ppg and commit 20.5 turnovers per game.
