ROAD TO SAN DIEGO: With less than a month left before the PacWest Basketball Tournament, the Road to San Diego is even more crowded than ever. The race for the six tournament slots in both the men's and women's fields are tight with several crucial games upcoming this week. The 2014 PacWest Basketball Tournament will be held March 6-8 at Point Loma's Golden Gymnasium.

In the women's field, Academy of Art remained at the top with another dominating win. The Urban Knights lead No. 2 Hawaii Pacific by three full games.  HPU won both its contests this past week, including a victory over California Baptist last Monday.  CBU, at No. 3, is two games behind HPU in the loss column after going 1-1.

Dixie State won its only game this past week to remain at No. 4.  Dominican continued its recent surge with a victory in its only game of the week and moved up to the No. 5 spot.  Hawaii Hilo dropped to No. 6 seed, two games ahead of Chaminade.

PACWEST FINAL 5: Haley Holmstead (American Fork, UT/American Fork) won the battle of the league's top-two scorers with 38 points against Sonia Aguilar and Holy Names. She shot 14-for-21 from the field and 10-of-12 from the free throw line. She has made double-digit field goals in three of the last six games.

ALL-TIME vs. BYUH: The Red Storm holds an 11-1 all-time advantage over BYUH. DSU is a perfect 7-0 at home and have won the last eight contests. The last time the two squared off was on Feb. 23, 2013 in the Burn Arena when DSU won 80-49 over the Seasiders.

LAST TIME AGAINST the SEASIDERS: Johnna Brown (Las Vegas, NV/Centennial ), Erica Hayes (East Palo Alto, CA/Menlo-Atherton) and Becca Thomas (Riverside, CA/Redwood) all scored in double figures to lead the Dixie State women's basketball team to 80-49 win over BYU Hawaii on Saturday night in the Burns Arena. Brown led the Storm with 22 points and 13 rebounds and added seven assists. Hayes added 14 points and eight rebounds and Thomas chipped in 14 points and nine rebounds. The DSU defense turned it up a notch, forcing the Seasiders to 29 turnovers that led to 31 Red Storm points. The Storm held BYUH without a field goal for the final 12:12 of the game and outrebounded the Seasiders 60-38. After jumping out to a 15-8 lead on a Jaymee Brugman (Phoenix, AZ/Desert Vista) layup, the Red Storm led by seven. But the pesky Seasiders wouldn't back down, answering with their on 10-2 run and take a 18-17 lead with 9:04 left. DSU regained the lead and went on a 28-6 run on the end of the half and led 54-24 at intermission. The second half saw the Storm dominate both the glass and the floor as they secured the home victory. DSU shot 40.2 percent from the field and outscored BYUH 44-10 in the paint. With the win DSU improves to 13-11 overall and 11-5 in the PacWest, while BYUH drops to 6-16 overall and 5-11 in PacWest.

SCOUTING BYU HAWAII: The Seasiders enter tonight's matchup with a 2-17 overall record and 2-12 PWC mark. They are currently in last place and have lost five straight contests. They had lost 12 straight to begin the season before breaking that with a pair of wins over Holy Names and Fresno Pacific. BYUH is led in scoring by former DSU basketball player Brydgette Tatupu-Leopoldo, who has scored in double figures in seven straight games, including a 32-point showing against Azusa Pacific. She is averaging 16.8 ppg and 5.5 rpg. Danna Lynn Hooper is also averaging 14.3 ppg for the BYUH squad who averages 57.7 ppg and allows 78.1 ppg.  They shoot 36.5 percent from the field, 34.6 percent from three and 68.1 percent from behind the arc and average just 35.7 rebounds per game.

LAST TIME OUT: The Dixie State University women's basketball team cruised to a 95-80 victory over Holy Names University tonight in a Pacific West Conference battle at the Burns Arena. Haley Holmstead (American Fork, UT/American Fork) scored 38 points to lead the Storm (9-11/7-7 PWC) to victory. Her 14-21 shooting helped DSU finish 37-74 (50 percent) from the field for the game. DSU rebounded their way to victory and limited its turnovers (15) to be able to control the tempo and pace of the game. Haileigh Emerine (Spanish Fork, UT/Spanish Fork) dominated the glass with 18 rebounds, despite only scoring four points, her presence was felt in the middle. The Storm used 19 points from Kaylah Miller (San Diego, CA/La Jolla Country Day) and a stellar 14 points from Brianna White (Phoenix, AZ/Tolleson Union) off the bench to put away the Hawks. Holy Names had four players in double figures, with Sonia Aguilar leading the way with 32 points.

RED STORM NOTES: DSU snapped its two game skid with its win over Holy Names on Saturday night. It was the most impressive team performance to date for the ladies. Of the six games remaining on the schedule, the Red Strom will play four against teams that are below them in the PWC standings.

The Red Storm enters the contest with a 9-11 overall record and a 7-7 PWC mark. They look to get back to .500 at home with a win an even its record at 4-4. Leading the way is PWC scoring leader Haley Holmstead (American Fork, UT/American Fork), she averages 22.4 ppg after her 38 point performance against Holy Names.

Dixie State shoots 37.5 percent from the field, 26.9 percent from three-point range, and 72.4 percent from the free-throw line. They continue to score (73.4 ppg) at will, but the defense has been the thorn in the heel. They allow 77.6 ppg and commit 20.7 turnovers per game.
