FRESNO, Calif. – The Dixie State men's soccer team suffered a 3-1 setback at Ramirez Field against host Fresno Pacific in the Pacific West Conference opener for both teams on Tuesday.

Dixie State dropped to 0-2-1 on the season, 0-1-0 in the PacWest.

"They are a quality team with a lot of seniors," head coach Danny Ortiz (Las Vegas, NV/Cimarron) said. "I thought our effort was great and the score doesn't indicate how well our guys played."

The Sunbirds (2-1-1, 1-0 PacWest) went up 2-0 with a pair of goals in the first half. FPU notched a 24th minute goal from Jorge Cheduri for a 1-0 lead.

Then, 14 seconds shy of halftime, Tyler Luke scored off a penalty kick.

"We gave up that silly goal late in the first half," Ortiz said. "I thought we outplayed them for most of the match."

Coming out in the second half, Dixie State cut the lead to 2-1 when Jara Eshete (Stansbury, UT/Stansbury) scored his first goal of the year after a pair of shots by McKay Moffat (Eagle, ID/Eagle) ended up blocked.

FPU's Joey Belzil made the score 3-1 with a chip shot over the keeper in the 80th minute.

Dixie State held 19-17 edge in shots overall in the game, including a 16-8 advantage in the second half.

Tyler Walters (Ogden, UT/Ben Lomand) took the loss for the Red Storm, but made two saves on the night. Fabien Rangel picked up the win for FPU, tallying six saves.

Ortiz added: "Nadav Elimelech (Las Vegas, NV/Spring Valley) was good in the middle tonight, Jara came off the bench strong, and Erik Shallenberger (Las Vegas, NV/Arbor View) was the man of the match. We will build on this match for the future."

The Red Storm gets back on the pitch on Thursday when they continue league play against Notre Dame de Namur at 5:30 p.m. Pacific in Belmont, Calif.
