ST. GEORGE, Utah – After enduring a cancelled match and the postponement of a weekend game due thunderstorms, the anticipation Tuesday night at Hansen Stadium was, in a word, palpable. The Dixie State men's soccer team eagerly anticipated their opening match of 2013 – a chance at redemption against Seattle Pacific.
 
The Red Storm played the Falcons even in the first half, but SPU netted a pair of second half goal en route to a 2-0 non-conference victory. Feelings on the home bench stung again with thoughts of last year's overtime loss in Washington still on the minds of the returning Dixie State players.
 
The loss drops DSU to 0-1 on the young season. Seattle Pacific bounced back after an opening loss to even its record to 1-1.
 
SPU put up eight shots in the first half before Dixie State had an opportunity at the goal. A pair of freshman, Justin Brinkerhoff (Saint George, UT/Desert Hills) and McKay Moffat (Eagle, ID/Eagle), missed wide and high respectively over the final six minutes of the first period.
 
Dixie forward Erik Shallenberger (Las Vegas, NV/Arbor View) played aggressively throughout the match. His two early shots in the second half ended up leading the squad for the night.
 
The Falcons placed the go-ahead shot in the net in the 65th minute on an unassisted goal by Sean Russell. Ten minutes later, Graham Reid headed in a rebounded shot past DSU goalkeeper Tyler Walters (Ogden, UT/Ben Lomand) for the 2-0 advantage.
 
Walters would make three saves between the posts, but take the loss in net. SPU's Cody Lang corralled the only DSU shot on goal to even his season record.
 
The Red Storm visits Northwest Nazarene on Saturday at 1 p.m. before heading to the Bay Area to open Pacific West Conference play next week.
