Red Storm Drop Opener at CSU Monterey Bay

Box Score SEASIDE, Calif. -- The Dixie State women's basketball team dropped its regular season opener at California State University Monterey Bay 98-70 in Seaside, Calif.

Leading the way for the Red Storm (0-1) was Haley Holmstead (American Fork, UT/American Fork) with 25 points and nine rebounds. Holmstead shot 7-21 from the field and 11-13 from the free throw line. Kaylah Miller (San Diego, CA/La Jolla Country Day) added 14 points, 12-18 from the free throw line.

After a Haley Holmstead (American Fork, UT/American Fork)  jumper that cut the early Otter lead to 5-4 with 17:20 left in the first half, CSUMB used a 20-3 run to create the seperation that led them to victory.

Shooting in the first half was what put the Red Storm behind the proverbial eight ball. DSU connected on just 4 of 23 (17.4%) from the field, 0-5 from the line, but hit 20-28 (71.4) free throws. They trailed 61-28 at the intermission.

Coach Catherria Turner said, "We have to learn to rely on our defense when our shots don't fall and put two halves of basketball together."

The Otters were the complete opposite in the first half, finding the twine on 58.1 percent (25-43) that included 9-18 (50%) from  behind the arc.

In the second half, the Red Storm found its stroke by shooting 14-34 (41.2%) to help them outscore the Otters 42-37.


CSUMB (0-1) had seven players finish double figures, with Nicole Beckman leading wat with 18 pioints. The Otters also hit 13 three-pointers in the game.

Turner concluded, "It was a real test to show us the things that we have to improve on going foward."

Dixie State will have two weeks before they play at CSU Los Angeles on Nov. 23 at 2 p.m.
