MSOC: Golden goal ends upset bid of No. 5 Seattle Pacific

Dixie State drops 1-0 game in region play

Box Score

SEATTLE – Sometimes looking strictly at the final box score cannot accurately portray the events of a sporting event.

Friday night at Interbay Stadium, Dixie State College battled the fifth-ranked Falcons of Seattle Pacific into overtime before a 93rd minute golden goal lifted SPU to a 1-0 victory in non-conference, West Region play.

The stats show Seattle Pacific fired four times as many shots as Dixie State – 16 to four – and the Red Storm were held without a shot on goal. But the stats do not describe the effort put forth by DSC.

“We played very well,” head coach Danny Ortiz said. “The stats are deflating, but the guys played their hearts out against a very good team on the road.”

Three of the four Dixie State (1-2-0) shots came in the first half. A lot of pressure was put on the defensive line and goalkeeper as the Falcons fired seven shots in each of the regulation periods and added two more in overtime.

Ortiz said: “Our guys played their hearts out. David Potocki (Phoenix, AZ/Mountain Ridge) and Alex Cox (Willard, UT/Box Elder) were great, but tonight's star was Erik Schallenberger. He was everywhere and got us out of situations.”

Offensively, freshman Michael Ropelato (Roy, UT/Roy) led DSC with two shots. Tyler Albretsen (Pleasant View, UT/Weber) and Joshua Cook (Las Vegas, NV/Las Vegas) tallied the other opportunities.

SPU's Blaine Carver netted the game-winner to the right corner past a diving attempt by Tyler Walters (Ogden, UT/Ben Lomand). The keeper faced five shots, making four saves.

“Our guys are disappointed with the loss, but not upset,” Ortiz said. “We played an even possession game and we will be in a lot of matches with the effort these guys gave tonight.”

The nationally-ranked Falcons remained undefeated on the year, 3-0-0.

Dixie State concludes a road trip in the Emerald State on Sunday with a match against Western Washington University. The match in Bellingham is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start. Follow the game with live stats via DixieAthletics.com
