Lancers spear back-to-back wins over Dixie State

Thomas scores 17 in her hometown

Box Score

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Revenge was on the minds of the Dixie State College women's basketball team Saturday night. Coming off a loss in the Burns Arena on Tuesday, the Red Storm could not hold onto a slim halftime lead, falling to the host Lancers 71-67 at Van Dyne Gymnasium in Pacific West Conference play.

Becca Thoma (Riverside, CA/Redwood)s, returning to her hometown of Riverside, led the Red Storm (16-7, 11-4 PWC) with 17 points and six rebounds. Kirsten Marie Liana (Honolulu, HI/Farrington) had four 3-pointers for 12 points and Sheila Adams (Layton, UT/Layton) needed 15 shot attempts for her 11 points.

The 3-point shot boosted DSC to as much as a nine-point lead in the first half. Hitting six of 11 attempts from distance counteracted the Lancers perfect 8-of-8 performance from the free-throw line in the first 20 minutes. At intermission, Dixie State led 37-36.

The Lancers opened the second half on a 9-0 run, sparked by Simone Holmes. The guard sat most of the first half in foul trouble, but made a bucket and produced openings for her teammates.

CBU built a 65-55 advantage at the 8:11 mark via aggressive moves to the buckets, drawing fouls and sinking free throws.

Dixie State chipped away at the advantage over the next seven minutes, eventually tying the game at 67-67. Thomas had five points in the 12-2 run.

With under a minute remaining, DSC had a chance to take the lead, but Liana turned the ball over. Down by two on the ensuing possession, Adams turned the ball over with a traveling violation with 10 seconds left. Myriah Hicks hit four charity shots over the final 25 second to determine the margin of victory.

Alexis Johnson led all scorers with 18 points on six-of-seven shooting. The Lancers shot 37 percent from the field, but were white-hot from the charity stripe (21-23, 91 percent).

Dixie State shot 41 percent from the floor, but were forced into 21 turnovers on the road.

The Red Storm return home Wednesday to battle BYU-Hawaii inside the Burns Arena. Tip is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
