WBB: Red Storm Drop Tip-Off Opener to Montana State Billings

Maxey leads team with 11 points

Box Score

SAINT GEORGE, UT -- The Dixie State women's basketball team dropped their opening game in the DSC Tip-Off Classic tonight to Montana State Billings 74-71 in the Burns Arena.

The Red Storm (1-1) could not contain the hot shooting hand of Quinn Peoples. She had a game-high 23 points that included five three-pointers.

MSUB (2-1) took advantage of Dixie State early miscues converting them into points and built an early 23-14 lead on a Peoples three pointer with 11:38 left in the first half.  The YellowJackets would extend their first half lead to as many as 13 points and took a 42-33 lead into the halftime. DSC committed 10 of their 15 turnovers in the first half.

In the second half, MSUB continued to keep pressure on the Red Storm defense, hitting big shot after big shot to keep DSC just out of reach.

But, Dixie State once again would try and make a run and had several chances late in the game to tie or take the lead.

The YellowJackets lead 56-46 with 11:51 remaining in the game, Kirsten Marie Liana (Honolulu, HI/Farrington) hit a three pointer with 7:10 left to cut the MSUB lead to two points at 60-58 and cap off a 12-4 DSC run.

The two teams traded baskets with over the next seven minutes of the game. The game appeared to be out reach when two free-throws by Janiel Olsen gave MSUB a seven point lead at final media timeout.

But, Erica Hayes (East Palo Alto, CA/Menlo-Atherton) answered with a three pointer and Johnna Brown (Las Vegas, NV/Centennial ) added her first field of the game with 2:58 left to cut the MSUB advantage to 69-67.

DSC trailed 72-69 with 49 seconds left, when Maxey stole the ensuing inbounds pass and laid it in to cut the lead to one point at 72-71 with 39 seconds left.

The YellowJackets Bobbi Knudsen isolated her defender as the shot clock was running down and connected on a jumper from 13 feet to give MSUB the 74-71 lead with 15 seconds left.

A game tying three-pointer with six seconds left by Rachel Spinks fell short and despite getting the offensive rebound, the Red Storm couldn't manage to get off another shot.

Statistically DSC shot 42.1 percent from the field to the YellowJackets 39.4 percent, but the first half lead of the MSUB was just too much for the Red Storm to overcome.

Leading the way for Dixie State was Maxey with 11 points, and Hayes and Spinks each added 10 points. Brown led all players with 13 rebounds.

Dixie State returns to action tomorrow in an afternoon game at 3:00 pm when they play host to Simon Fraser. SFU lost the early game to Colorado Mesa 62-45.
