Late Surge Not Enough as Red Storm Dropped by Cal State LA

Box Score
SAINT GEORGE, Utah – The Dixie State College women's basketball team dropped a 73-69 non-conference game to Cal State Los Angeles today in the Thanksgiving Classic at the Burns Arena.

Losing at home for the first time since Nov 28, 2009, a string of 22 consecutive home wins, the Red Storm couldn't overcome the second half 14 point deficit.

Dixie State (4-2) battled back to take the lead with 38 seconds remaining when senior guard Sheila Adams (Layton, UT/Layton) hit three free throws to give DSC the 69-68 advantage. Adams was fouled while shooting three-pointer.

Cal State LA (2-2) battled back by going to Lacy Ramon inside. Ramon posted up and made a nice scoop shot and was fouled with 22 seconds left. Ramon converted the free throw to give the Golden Eagles a 71-69 lead.

The Red Storm ran a great set and Adams curled off a screen, but her three point shot with 14 seconds remaining was just short. DSC got the rebound but turned the ball over in haste, forcing DSC to foul. Maryum Jenkins would connect on the final two free throws to secure the victory.

Dixie State led by as many as nine points in the first half and took a 34-29 advantage into the intermission.

CSULA made some halftime adjustments and played with a lot of intensity leading the second half surge. They forced the Red Storm to commit 16 turnovers and took care of business on their end by committing only 14.

Coach Angie Kristensen said, “Cal State brought it and we didn't match their energy.”

The Golden Eagles turned to Lacy Ramon who had 22 points and seven rebounds to lead them to the win. Jenkins also added 15 points and eight rebounds as well as Samantha Hansen's 14 points and seven boards. CSULA shot 38.1 percent from the field, but converted 20-28 from the foul line.

Adams led Dixie State by making five three pointers and a season-high 24 points. Becca Thomas (Riverside, CA/Redwood) and Qorreah Joice (Los Angeles, CA/Windward) each had 10 points and Kirtsen Marie Liana had 10 rebounds and eight points. The Red Storm shot just 35.9 percent from the field and 13-20 from the foul line.

“Bottom line is we can't play 20 minutes and expect to win games. It comes down to effort and we need to find a way to play a complete game,” said Kristensen. “No excuses, we must learn from this and move on.

Dixie State will have nine days off before it opens PacWest Conference play on Monday December 5th at 5:00 p.m. against Notre Dame de Namur.

Western Oregon vs. Academy of Art

Academy of Art came through with a strong second half to knock off Western Oregon 61-59 in the third game of the Thanksgiving Classic.

The Urban Knights shut down WOU's Rylee Peterson in the second half. Peterson scored 23 points in the first half, but she was held to three points in the second half.

WOU led 59-57 with 18 seconds remaining, but then Peterson turned the ball over on an inbound pass. AAU's Jordan Rogers intercepted the pass and put in a layup. She was fouled on the play and hit the free throw. AAU was able to seal the game on another Peterson turnover.

AAU was led offensively by Alisa Griggs, who scored 21 points and gathered eight rebounds. The Urban Knights forced the Wolves into 27 turnovers for the game. Rogers, Ariel Dale and Vianai Austin each contributed four steals to that total for AAU.
