Walker and Adams Lead Red Storm to 83-76 win over Western Oregon

Box Score
SAINT GEORGE, Utah – Point guard LaBrea Walker (North Las Vegas, NV/Desert Pines) scored a career-high 17 points to lead the Dixie State College women's basketball team to a 83-76 win over Western Oregon tonight in the Burns Arena.

The redshirt freshman connected on 7-7 from the foul line and was 4-6 from the field with two three-pointers to pace the Red Storm (4-1) attack. Walker also sparked DSC with four steals in her 24 minutes of play.

Coach Angela Kristensen said, “I thought LaBrea Walker (North Las Vegas, NV/Desert Pines) made an immediate impact tonight. She gave us a great spark off the bench.”

The first half featured both squads' trading baskets and the lead several times. A Chanel Maxey (Anaheim, CA/Canyon) jumper with 3:39 left in the first half gave DSC a 28-26 lead and they would never look back. The Red Storm would take a 38-35 advantage into the locker room.

The second half saw the Red Storm surge to a 15-point lead with 9:43 left in the game, only to see the Wolves respond by cutting it to three points with 18 second remaining. Free throws down the stretch sealed the win for Dixie State.

Senior point guard Sheila Adams (Layton, UT/Layton) spent most of the first half on the bench in foul trouble, but capitalized in the second half by scoring 14 of her 16 points to spark the Red Storm. After WOU cut the lead to five with 3:34 remaining, Becca Thomas (Riverside, CA/Redwood) found Adams on a skip pass and she nailed the wide open three to build the Red Storm lead back to eight points.

Sheila Adams (Layton, UT/Layton) carried the team down the stretch,” continued Kristensen

Shooting 47.4 percent from the field and hitting 24-34 free throws, DSC turned away the hungry Wolves (0-5) who remained winless on the season.

Despite Western Oregon shooting 51 percent from the field, the Red Storm forced WOU to commit 28 turnovers, which caused their ultimate demise. DSC committed 18 turnovers in victory.

The hectic paced game featured 47 fouls and a combined 66 free throws.

Kristensen said, “I was happy with the win, but we need to cut down on our turnovers and fouls, those are mental mistakes.”

WOU was led by four players in double figures with Melissa Fowler leading the way with 17 points, both Jade Haas and Dana Goularte each added 13 points and Lorrie Clifford had 10 points in the loss.

“I give Western Oregon credit because they battled the entire game. We need to be prepared and put together and entire game tomorrow night,” concluded Kristensen.

DSC will host final day of the Thanksgiving Classic tomorrow with a 2 p.m. tip-off with Cal State Los Angeles. Academy of Art plays Western Oregon at 12 p.m.

The Urban Knights were led by senior guard Devin London, who ended the game with 29 points.

Every time CSULA threatened to break the game open, AAU managed to hang around. Trailing 69-62 with 3:32 left in the game, the Urban Knights tightened up on defense and managed to make just enough shots to force overtime.

In overtime AAU pulled away quickly thanks to baskets by senior guard Lorraine Etchell and London.
