Bench Leads Red Storm in 77-49 win over Adams State

Box Score

PHOENIX, Ariz. – The Dixie State College women's basketball team made eight first half three pointers that propelled them to a 77-49 win over Adams State College today at the Grand Canyon University Tip-off Classic.

Gabriella Rodriguez (West Jordan, UT/West Jordan) hit a three-pointer with 15:51 left in the first half that gave the Red Storm (2-1) a 14-2 lead and DSC would never look back.  Dixie State used a solid first half shooting effort by connecting on eight of 11 three-pointers and 16-28 from the field to take a 50-25 lead at intermission.

Coach Angie Kristensen had to turn to her bench in the first half after three starters got in early foul trouble.  34 of the 50 first half points came from the DSC bench and 12 of the 13 players who played scored a basket.  The bench would finish the game by scoring 49 total points. Kaylah Miller (San Diego, CA/La Jolla Country Day) and Labrea Walker (North Las Vegas, NV/Desert Pines) each had 8 first half points to help advance the Red Storm lead.

Kristensen said, “The bench played unbelievable tonight with three starters in foul trouble. We shot the ball well and that helped get our defense going.”

The Red Storm defense forced Adams State (1-2) to commit 29 turnovers for the game and they turned that into 17 steals and 23 points.

Three DSC players finished in double figures with Sheila Adams (Layton, UT/Layton) and Walker each tallying a team-high 11 points and center Qorreah Joice (Los Angeles, CA/Windward), who did not travel last week, added 10 points and seven rebounds in her debut.  DSC finished the game shooting 44.8 percent from the field and connected on 11-21 (52.4 percent) from three-point range.

The Grizzlies were lead by Caitlin Boal and Chloe Cable who each scored 14 points. Cable also added eight rounds.

“We played a complete team effort and I thought we came out and took control of the game from the beginning,” concluded Kristensen.

The Red Storm will play again tomorrow at 4 p.m. at the GCU Tip-off Classic when they take on RMAC opponent Nebraska-Kearney. This is the first ever meeting between the two teams. Follow all the live action on DixieAtheltics.com with the “Voice of the Red Storm,” John Potter.
