Box Score LOS ANGELES – Dixie State College played for the second straight day at Cal State LA, but this time against a the host team CSULA. Dixie State looked to capitalize on the opportunity to pick-up a West Region win. The Red Storm fell short losing 50-60.
CSULA (2-6) led most of the game, only allowing DSC to take the lead once.
Jessie Ingraham (Tuscon. AZ/Canyon Del Oro) and Johnna Brown (Las Vegas, NV/Centennial ) had 12 points each for Dixie State College (3-5), which was playing its second game in as many days. The Red Storm defeated Cal State Dominguez Hills on Monday.
Cal State L.A. shot 46.2 percent for the game and made half of its 18 field-goal attempts in the second half, including three of four from behind the 3-point arc. The Golden Eagles were also effective at the free-throw line, making 21-of-33 tries.
The Golden Eagles limited Dixie State College to just 26 percent shooting. The Red Storm made only three of their 24 attempts from behind the 3-point arc. Dixie State College made only 22 percent of its shots in the second half.
Cal State L.A. and Dixie State battled evenly in the first half. The Golden Eagles moved out to a five-point lead, 25-20, late in the first half after a free throw by Brionna Baker, a layup by Baker and a layup by Jazzi Johnson broke a 20-20 tie. The Golden Eagles settled for a 29-27 lead at halftime.
Dixie State College took its biggest lead of the game at 33-30 with 11:04 remaining in the game after a basket by Tanya Clark (Beaumont. CA/Beaumont). The Golden Eagles, though, scored eight straight points to take the lead for good. A basket by Crandell made it 33-32 and a three-point play by Johnson gave the Golden Eagles a 35-33 lead. Kelli McClintick added a 3-pointer to make it 38-33.
Cal State L.A. took its biggest lead of the game, 48-37, after a basket by Kuzma completed a 10-0 run that began with back-to-back 3-pointers by Terrell and continued with a basket by Stacie Whitley.
A 3-pointer by Clark pulled Dixie State College to within six points, 51-45, with 3:24 to go, but that was as close as the Red Storm would get. A pair of free throws by Crandell pushed the lead back up to 10 points, 57-47, in the final minute of play.
Dixie State will now have 11 days off for Christmas vacation for playing host to RMAC opponent Mesa State College on 1/2/10. The game will tip off at 5:00 PM in the Burns Arena.
