Tanya Clark (Beaumont. CA/Beaumont) chalked up the fourth double-double of her career with 17 points and 11 rebounds to lead Dixie State College (2-1) to a 85-84 victory over Pittsburgh State University (KS) (2-3).
Clark, getting her second start of the season, played a 28 minutes and was pivotal in leading the Red Storm from the seven point deficit with 6:14 left in the game. During the run she made a three pointer, a jumper and made two crucial free throws. Her play led the Red Storm on a 20-12 run to end the game.
Dixie State built an eight point lead on a Clark layup with 11:13 left and it appeared as if the Red Storm were going to run away with the game. That's when Pitt State went on a 21-5 run to take the lead by seven. DePrice Taylor (22 points game high) and Bailey Waugh (9 points) led the run the Gorillas made.
The first half of the game featured six 8 ties and 10 lead changes. Both teams in previous games had trouble with turnovers, but were able to limit them to 14 a piece. Clark led DSC in scoring, but without the play of
Shanae Vaifanua (Hurricane, UT/Hurricane) (15 points/3 rrebounds), the Red Storm would not have prevailed. Vaifanua converted a layup on a baseline pass with 33 seconds to give DSC the final lead.
Four Red Storm players scored in double figures, Clark, Vaifanua,
Johnna Brown (Las Vegas, NV/Centennial ) (11 points/5 rebounds), and Na'Chelle Chambers (10 points/5 rebounds). Dixie State shot a season best .450 from the field and converted 5 for 10 from three point range.
Pittsburg State was lead in scoring by Taylor with 22 points and shot .484 from the field.
Dixie State will play again tomorrow in the Thanksgiving Classic when they host #5 ranked Fort Lewis College at 3:00 PM in the Burns Arena. The Red Storm and the Skyhawks met last week in Durango, CO and FLC won 68-54.
