Men's soccer add first victory in school history (09/27/08)

ST. GEORGE - As the old saying goes. better late than never. A late scoring spree helped Dixie State's men's soccer team earn a piece of history.

Freshman Kyle Beck (Sandy. UT/Juan Diego) scored twice. including an unassisted tally in the final 10 minutes. as DSC blanked Chaminade 4-0 on a warm. sun-splashed afternoon at Hansen Stadium to earn its first win in the program's brief history.

"We're still basically a new team. Some guys have said they struggle to get together (in the game flow). but once we do. we know we can build on it and get better as the season goes on." Beck said.

Dixie State (1-0-1 Pac West. 1-3-1 overall) put three of its four goals together in an 18-minute stretch of the second half that helped to wake up a sluggish offense that had a rough time finding the range until Kevin Young (Salt Lake City. UT/Kearns) seized a second chance.

Less than a minute after Young pushed a shot wide left off a rebound from in close. he took a pass on a break from Kevin Henderson and beat Chaminade keeper Kris Lounsbury into the right corner of the net in the 70th minute that gave DSC a 2-0 lead.

Beck had the goal of the game in the 81st minute. settling a ball with his right foot. then switching to his left for a quick one-on-one shot from 20 yards out that zipped past Lounsbury into the left corner.

With three minutes left. Kyle Yarush (Kingman. AZ/Kingman) wrapped up the scoring on a feed from Colby Critchlow (Sandy. UT/Hillcrest) off a break opportunity. The goal helped DSC achieve its best scoring output of the season. beating its previous best of three in an overtime loss to Montana State Billings in the season opener on Aug. 29.

For Dixie State head coach Danny Ortiz. the effort fell short of his expectations.

"We won. but we didn't play better soccer." he said. "You've got to be happy with the win. but you've got to learn how to win. Getting that first win is always hard."

Despite getting whistled for six offsides and five yellow cards. Dixie State managed to put 25 shots toward Lounsbury and take seven corner kicks. DSC goalie Ben Brooksby (Hyde Park. UT/Skyview) had to make only one save.

"On Thursday (in a 1-1 tie against BYU-Hawaii). we couldn't finish our opportunities. Today. we did in the second half." Ortiz said.

Beck scored the game's first goal in the 11th minute off an assist from Dixie grad Zac Hales (Saint George, UT/Dixie). Hales now has two goals and two assists in the team's first five games.

The Silverswords fell to 0-3 in Pac West play (1-8-1 overall) and have been outscored 17-1 in those losses.
