Utah Tech reached the 30-win plateau for the first time in the program's brief NCAA Division I era on the strength of a 16-4 road victory at UT Arlington on Saturday afternoon at Clay Gould Ballpark.
Â
After getting shut out in Friday night's series opener, the Trailblazers wasted little time getting the bats going on Saturday.Â
Â
Utah Tech (30-20/7-7 WAC) struck for a pair of first pair of first inning tallies thanks to a
Miller Durham run-scoring safety squeeze and a
Finnegan Stewart RBI-single.
Â
The Trailblazers then broke the game open with a seven-run second inning to extend to a 9-0 lead.Â
Â
Utah Tech sent 11 batters to the plate in the frame and rapped out seven hits, including a pair of two-run singles from
Kace Naone and
Hudson Manwaring.Â
Â
And like they did in the opening stanza, the duo Durham and Stewart both collected their second runs batted in on the day as part of the rally.Â
Â
UT Arlington (17-28/6-8 WAC) clapped right back with three quick runs before the Blazers could record an out in the home third.
Â
However senior righthander
Dakoda West (W, 6-4) managed to right the ship as he went on to retire nine of the next 10 Mavericks he faced, including eight-straight, to send the game to the fifth inning with Utah Tech up by a 9-3 count.
Â
The Trailblazer offense got those three runs back for its starter in the fifth, which included a two-out, two-run Stewart opposite single, to stretch the lead back to nine at 12-3.Â
Â
Utah Tech cruised on from there to halt its five-game WAC skid and even the weekend series. Â
Â
Eight of the nine Trailblazers in the starting lineup had at least one base hit as the Utah Tech finished with 18 hits on the afternoon.
Â
Stewart tied his career highs with four hits and four RBI to help lead the Blazer effort. Meanwhile Manwaring posted his first four-hit day as a Trailblazer and drove in five runs, including a bases clearing three-run double in the ninth.Â
Â
Naone also collected two hits to go with his two RBI, while
Ryan Kroepel,
Petey Soto Jr. and
Andrew Pyle pounded out two-hits apiece, with Pyle legging out his second triple of the season in the eighth inning.
Â
West struck out seven in five innings complete to earn his sixth win of the season.
Brock Roundy followed that with a scoreless sixth inning, and
Easton Brooks (S, 2) tossed three innings of one-hit relief to earn his second save of the year.
Â
Utah Tech will look to clinch the series win in the rubber game of the three-game WAC set on Sunday morning beginning at 10:05 a.m. (MT).Â
