Utah Tech scored a season-high 17 runs, and the Trailblazers needed every one of them, as they snapped a five-game slide thanks to a 17-13 victory over Fresno State on Thursday night at Bruce Hurst Field.
Utah Tech (14-8/0-0 WAC) erased an early 4-1 deficit with a five-run second, and chased that with a six-run third inning to bolt out to a commanding 12-4 advantage through three innings complete.
The Trailblazers plated all five of their runs before an out was recorded in the second inning.
Ty Johnsen and
Gavin Long both singled to open the stanza, while
Hudson Manwaring was plunked to load the bases.
Petey Soto Jr. followed with a sharp single to left to score Johnsen, while Long scampered home on a wild pitch to cut the Bulldogs' lead to 4-3.
Blazer lead-off hitter
Kyle McDaniel then gave Utah Tech its first lead of the game with his fourth homer of the season, a three-run shot over the right field wall.
Utah Tech broke the game open one inning later, sending 12 batters to the plate in a frame that saw the Blazers rap out six hits. Long doubled home the first run of the rally, while Soto Jr. collected his second RBI of the night. Manwaring and Kroepel also drove in runs, and
Finnegan Stewart capped inning with a two-run opposite field single.
Fresno State (7-13) stormed right back with five runs of its own in the fourth to trim the Blazer cushion to 12-9.
The Trailblazers managed to get one of those runs back in the home fourth, but the Bulldogs countered with three more runs in the sixth, and later pulled even at 13-13 after an Owen Faust run-scoring fly out in the eighth.
Utah Tech clapped right back in the home eighth, thanks in large part to a crucial Bulldog error, to extend back to a four-run advantage.
Kace Naone singled to lead off the inning, and after two Fresno State wild pitches moved him to third, he trotted home on a Johnsen sacrifice fly out.
With one on and no outs, Long bounced on what could have been a double play. However a Bulldog throwing error allowed pinch runner
Mays Madsen to go first-to-third on the play.
Manwaring was walked to load the bases, which was followed by a Soto Jr. fly ball that was deep enough to advance all three base runners, including Mays scoring the second run of the inning.
McDaniel then stepped up and belted an opposite field single to left to chase home both Long and Manwaring carrying big insurance runs.
Kroepel was called on to move from third base to the mound in the ninth, and the junior closer retired the Bulldogs in order to end the game.
Utah Tech outhit Fresno State 16-12, with McDaniel leading the way with three hits and a career-high tying five RBI out of the lead-off spot. Soto Jr. also rapped out three hits to go with his three RBI and three runs scored, while Johnson and Long collected two hits apiece.
Meanwhile
Miller Durham homered for the third consecutive game, doing so with a one out solo shot in the first inning, as part of a 2-for-2 effort.
The two teams will wrap up their brief two-game series on Friday night beginning at 6:05 p.m. (MT).
