Finnegan Stewart's walk-off, two-run home run with one out in the bottom of the 10th inning lifted Utah Tech to an 8-7 victory over visiting Fresno State on Friday night at Bruce Hurst Field.
Â
With the win, the Trailblazers swept the two-game home series to improve to 15-8 on the season, while the Bulldogs dropped their 10
th-straight to fall to 7-14 overall.Â
Â
After both team traded first inning runs, Utah Tech plated three runs in the third to jump out to a 4-1 advantage.
Â
Ryan Kroepel broke the tie a double to right center that chased home
Hudson Manwaring, who walked and stole second ahead of the Kroepel two-bagger.
Â
Kace Naone then reached on a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt attempt, which allowed Kroepel to score from second base. Naone moved to second on the play and was moved to third on a ground out before scoring on a
Ty Johnsen RBI-flyout.Â
Â
Fresno State clapped right back an inning later with a two-out, two-run Marcus Nolen homer that pared the Blazer lead down to 4-3.
Â
Utah Tech maintained that slim advantage until the FSU eighth, when the Bulldogs struck for three runs, including an Ethan Payne two-RBI single with two outs that gave his side a 6-4 cushion.
Â
The Trailblazers answered that rally with two runs of their own to tie the game at 6-6.
Andrew Pyle reached on the Bulldogs' third error of the night, while
Petey Soto Jr. followed with a sharp single to left field.
Â
That brought up lead-off hitter
Kyle McDaniel, who laced an opposite-field double down the left field line to drive in Pyle and advance Soto Jr. to third. Soto Jr. later tied the game tied on a wild pitch, while McDaniel moved up 90 feet with no outs in the frame.
Â
However FSU reliever Will Page-Allen managed to escape the inning and strand McDaniel at third after he struck out the next three Blazer hitters he faced.
Â
Fresno State took the lead again in the 10
th thanks to a one-out Zach Plasschaert solo homer.Â
Â
Then in the Trailblazer 10
th, McDaniel reached on a one-out walk ahead of Stewart, who ambushed a 1-1 Page-Allen (L, 2-1) fast ball and drove high over the hitter's eye in straight-away center field to end the game.
Â
McDaniel posted his second-straight, three-hit game as he double twice as part of a 3-for-5 night to go with his RBI and run scored. The junior second baseman wound up going 6-for-11 in the series with three extra base hits, six RBI and three runs.
Â
Kroepel and Johnsen (two doubles) also collected two hits apiece as Utah Tech finished with 10 safeties on the night.Â
Â
Junior righthander
Jackson Price struck out a season-high five over 5.1 innings in his third start of the season, though he did not in the decision.Â
Â
Senior southpaw
Brock Roundy fanned three in two innings of relief, and
Talan Kelly (W, 4-0) surrendered one run and two hits over the final 2.2 innings to earn his team leading fourth win of the season.Â
Â
Utah Tech will now head out on a six-game road swing, which starts with a brief two-game series at UNLV to wrap up the weekend. Game one of the series will take place on Saturday night starting at 7:05 p.m. (MT), followed by a Sunday matinee at 1:05 p.m. (MT), at Earl E. Wilson Stadium in Las Vegas.Â
