Rodriguez's Header Gives Trailblazers 3-2 Victory at Idaho State

(Pocatello, Idaho - Sept. 4, 2025) – Junior defender Michelle Rodriguez scored a header in the closing minutes of the match to give Utah Tech women's soccer a 3-2 victory over Idaho State on Thursday night at Davis Field. Senior midfielder Kyah Le assisted on the game-winner, sending a cross into the box from a UT free kick in the 88th minute.  UT's three goals were the most scored in a game by the Trailblazers this season and the most in a game by UT since last season's 4-0 drubbing of Southern Utah in Cedar City, Utah.

Senior Lacy Fox put the Trailblazers (3-2-1, 0-0-0 WAC) on the scoreboard early, blasting a shot from downtown over Bengal freshman goalkeeper Hannah Wieler and into the back of the net. Sophomore midfielder Bre Koscielski set up the opportunity by winning the ball out of the air and feeding it to Le for a through pass to Fox.  ISU (2-2-2, 0-0-0 Big Sky) struck back to level things at 1-1 in the 23rd minute. Senior midfielder Mary Za buried a shot into the top left of the net off a cross from the right side. Redshirt junior midfielder/forward Saydree Cooke and sophomore midfielder/forward Paige Harris assisted on the goal.

Redshirt sophomore forward Lataya Brost reclaimed the lead for Utah Tech in the 28th minute. Brost pick-pocketed a Bengal defender, took two touches into the box and beat Wieler with a shot toward the left post.  The Trailblazers racked up four more shots before halftime, including one off the crossbar by freshman forward Jocelyn Wright, but couldn't extend their lead before the break.

On an ISU counterattack, senior goalkeeper Brianna Frey protected her near post and saved a shot by Cooke in the 58th minute.

The Trailblazers produced a pair of chances in the 58th and 59th minutes. Brost tried a shot to the bottom right of the net, but Wieler made the save. Wieler stopped a long-range attempt by junior defender/midfielder Nicole Choren off the succeeding corner kick.

Frey rose up to make a one-handed save, stopping a dangerous opportunity on net by Bengal freshman midfielder Parker Sullivan in the 62nd minute. Frey would end the night with two saves. Wieler made her own one-handed save on a promising shot by Fox in the 66th minute.

Idaho State drew a penalty kick in the 71st minute on a foul near the goalline. Za converted the chance to the left side of the net, tying things up at 2-2.

With just over five minutes to go, redshirt freshman forward Liv Leonard took a touch to the right and tried a shot, but was foiled by Wieler. The Bengal GK made another save in the 86th minute, stopping a deflected shot by Koscielski.

Utah Tech reclaimed the lead for the final time on a free kick in the 88th minute. From a cross by Le, Rodriguez flew into the penalty area, tracked the ball and headed in the winning goal at the back post. It was Rodriguez's second goal of the season and career-first game-winning goal.

Utah Tech outshot Idaho State 19-16, with an 8-5 advantage in shots on goal. UT committed more fouls at a clip of 15-9, while ISU totaled five corner kicks to the visitors' three. Each team had one offside offense.

The Trailblazers next travel to Salt Lake City, Utah, to challenge in-state foe Utah on Thursday, Sept. 11. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Ute Field.
